*Update

Image

Was able to get some surface grinding done yesterday.

Ready for HT.

These are the next steels that will be tested.

Thanks to Spyderco for sending the Maxamet, Rex45 and the Spy27.

Spyderco was very nice and surfaced the decarb off on the Maxamet and Rex45
HUGE time and work saver they made it flat with a good finish which saves a lot of work and helps with getting accurate hardness test readings.

I'll keep folks updated on the progress.

-Shawn

My grateful thanks too!
Sal & Spyderco, Shawn, & Larrin, you guys bring such a rich texture to this hobby/avocation/obsession! Bravo!

I am excited to see the results!

Are the Maxamet, Rex45 and SPY27 samples heat treated by Spyderco, or are you & Larrin doing your own heat treatment?

I'll be heat treating them, Larrin sent me the protocols he wants for his testing guidelines.

Great timing. Thanks much to everyone involved in this project.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Finishing up the next batch for Dr Larrin.

I thought it would be interesting to show what the CATRA blades can do before the edge is put on them.

Often times it's difficult to contextualize with all the massive details involved, thought it would be neat to share that the CATRA blades were designed to be fully functional high performance blades so that the testing would reflect useful data about steels for cutting knives not just purely acedemic.

Is it just the 8 in the photo above or are there more steels to test? Any hints?

Just a measly 8 for now (sad face)

Guess we'll have to suffer with only 8 for now :p

Shawn that video was great in that it definitely show's how important geometry and blade thickness is. I doubt my 1/4" Becker BK2 hair popping sharp would do any better on that potato. Thanks so much for your involvement on this forum and sharing with us. I look forward to the next round of tests!

Bring on the measly 8! I'm looking forward to this.... I love this. Yea, that's why I'm a Spyderco Fan, where else can I get these steels in a knife.

The rumors are true, Dr Larrin has designed a New CPM stainless steel that is quite remarkable.

Excited to see how it does in testing with these two conditions .

What? Somewhere in here I can imagine a version of Abbot & Costello's "Who's on first" bit...
