Hahah, that's my "just in case" knife that I keep in my truck. Wouldn't work against someone carrying a gun, but would likely scare off any other person attempting harm/road rage/etc. :cool:

Back in the mid-late 90's there was an oriental store in our local mall. I was 16 years old, walked in there and saw it...NEEDED IT! No ID required or anything. My friend bought some playing cards with razor blades on the 4 corners.

Safe to say, we'll never see something like that in a mall ever again! Especially selling to minors.

What unusual knives do you all own?

Here is mine. This is a first edition, pre-Gerber Rolox. I have forgotten the model name. It is a lock back but the blade rocks up and comes out of the front. It is a pretty little knife.

It is one hand opening but requires two hands to close.

I'll have to pull it out from storage, but I have a knife very similar to that one Doc. It has the same deployment method, but is a different brand.

I'll try ti get some pics today.

Blackie Collins designed it and it was built, of course, by the original Bench Mark. Then the design was sold and ended up in Gerber's hands and it was downhill from there. I have a larger one called a Diamondback ( I think) as well that I got around 1978 or 1979. I carried it because it was one hand opening and I got very fast with the deployment. There were, from smallest to largest, the Sidewinder (above), the Viper, and the Diamond Back.

I remember buying a switchblade from the fort worth stock show when I was in elementary school... Ive also bought a few knives from gun shows when I was a kid as well. I remember being surprised when the cashier at Walmart wouldn't let me buy a knife and bb pistol when i was like 14. I was like wtf ive been buying weapons for years lol

I don't own anything too crazy, but these are pretty.. we'll go with.. "unique"..

Top - a gift from my uncle, who considers himself a "knife guy".. haha, I question his tastes, but he does at least know how to keep his knives sharp.. and I will admit, I don't have a knife that is more slim in the pocket than this thing..

Bottom - a gift from my sister "because I know you like knives and guns!"

I will keep both of them forever, if only for sentimental reasons..

I started buying my own knives at 13 ( late 1970s), mostly Schrade pocketknives down at the old hardware store. One was a large Old Timer folding hunter with a brass liner lock, my first-ever lock blade. Then I was with my dad at a mall, and I went alone into a knife shop. I wanted a knife I saw in a case, but the guy behind the counter said, “Sorry, kid, I can’t sell to you until you’re 18.” Well, I knew my dad wasn’t going to buy it for me, so that was that.

Sometime in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, I got a dragon knife that was made in Hong Kong from a martial arts supply guy. I don’t know why I got it. The knife was very large, with a clip point blade, a back lock, and a clear plastic handle with a molded dragon in the plastic. I think the blade was about 4.5” or so. TBH, I don’t know why I bought it. I still have it somewhere.

Anyway, I the first knife I bought was when I was about 7 years old. It was a barlow. I also bought a Solingen hunting knife, many more barlows, another Solingen hunting knife, and stockmans, all by the time I was 12 years old. We lived in the city, but the city limit was just across the orchard from us. a 2 minute walk. All the rest was farms and forests and mountains. So, I guess it is not too surprising. All boys of rational parents had knives. We never got into trouble with them, either. It was so socially frowned upon no one would dare misuse a knife.

Anyone have something with an unusual opening method?

This is a long discontinued Buck Paradigm with a spring assisted flipper. The blade is locked closed until you rotate the bolster upward. Then, to deploy the blade you press the flIpper down into the handle and at the same time your fingertip will push the bolster back down, thus locking the blade open.

To stow the blade you rotate the bolster up and fold the blade, against spring pressure, back into the handle. A detent holds the blade closed and you swing the bolster back down to lock it closed.

The handles are dark gray linen micarta and the blade is Sanvik 13C26. It has a pocket clip for right hand, tip up carry. The spring assist opens the 3.25”, (8.25 cm,) blade with authority!

Yeah, they made that knife in auto as well. Move the bolster and the blade flies open. Close the bolster and lock it.
