New to Spyderco and the forum

#1

Post by BourbonCowboy »

Hey y'all,

I'm new here, having just purchased my first Spyderco knife...the Native 5. After a lot of research (being that I'm stuck in the house until this COVID-19 thing passes) I made the decision that this would be the perfect knife for me. As it turns out, I was right. The size is perfect for EDC, and the weight makes it almost unnoticeable in my pocket. And to top it off, as a lefty, the ambi clip positioning is something I've been wanting all my life.

This is the first knife of decent quality I've ever owned. My previously mentioned research led me to a better understanding of the S30V steel, but I still was skeptical. That is, until I decided to test the sharpness by shaving the hair on my arm. A couple Band-Aids later, I understood what all the fuss was about. This is one seriously sharp knife. I became an immediate fan. Somehow I believe that I'll end up owning more than one Spyderco knife...and my family members will too.

I have to mention, the initial sharpness you experienced isn't what the fuss is about for S30V. Nearly any knife can get an initial razor edge that will shave hair. Your S30V is special because it will hold that good edge for awhile. Welcome to the world of knife steels. It's a deep rabbit hole.

That's what I'm afraid of. My other hobbies (vintage audio, photography, and shooting handguns) have become a bit expensive. I hope I can keep this under control.
