Quality issue
Quality issue
Just purchased this Police 4 K390. I don’t want to return it as it’s hard to find but I’m not loving this gap. Any ideas if Spyderco will cover this under warranty?
Re: Quality issue
Was it like that before you installed the aftermarket clip? I'm thinking the clip screws might be too long and that could be causing the issue.

Re: Quality issue
If you purchased it new and weren't happy, the right thing to do is contact your dealer for a return. As mentioned you have an aftermarket clip and that might be an issue.

Re: Quality issue
It was that way before the clip. I used the original clip screws.
Re: Quality issue
Just out of curiosity I'd take the clip screws out and see what happens. It definitely looks like they're pulling the liner away from the back spacer. Hopefully it's not bent.

Re: Quality issue
Mine’s the same:
(Bear in mind it’s been disassembled for cleaning and has a few years of use on it.)
As mentioned above, the issue is the screw tension from the aftermarket clip, and that it’s a big knife with thin liners and a relatively long distance between the butt end and clip screws and the next screw behind the backlock release.
I have seen traditional knives that have ended up with bowed or rippled liner scales from retained austenite converting to different shaped martensite crystals over time, but Spyderco have mentioned that they even cryo their steel liners, so they should be very dimensionally stable after being precision flat ground at the factory.
If that kind of thing really bothers you, you have a few options.
- Play with the clip screw tension a bit.
- If that doesn’t work, you could get a smaller, pinned knife like a Caly 3.5 which has a completely flush spine.
- Or you could just use the heck out of it, and the ‘issue’ might recede in importance. :)

Re: Quality issue
I was wrong. I guess I didn’t notice the issue until I added the new clip. Once I loosened the screws the issue is resolved. Thanks for everyone’s help!

Re: Quality issue
Glad to hear it's sorted. I hope you get a lot of use and enjoyment out of it. I think it's one of the best knives Sal has designed. :)
Re: Quality issue
Maybe remove (probably use a sharpening stone) a little off the end of the screw that is causing it.
How much of a gap is there, a fraction of a millimeter? That might be all you'd need to take off the end of the screw.
Maybe add something so the screw doesn't go so deep. The smallest washer in the world between the screw and the clip or the clip and the G-10.
