Knives for fidgeters?

#1

Post by PoisonedPizza »

I have ADHD and fidget with my knives, so I recently bought a pm2, love the compression lock. Are there other knives, with or without the compression lock, that are good for fidgeting? I already have my eyes on the Manix and Ikuchi.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the knife is cooler than the pen.

Do you want bigger or smaller than the PM2?

Yojimbo is my personal favorite, but the Lil Native compression lock is also excellent.

Most of Spyderco's knives feature excellent ergonomic design and can be opened multiple ways.

The Compression lock is the one that lets you flick and swing open best IMO. Golden USA models are slightly better at free-swinging (without side-to-side slop) than most Taiwan-made models at this point, though the latest Ikuchi is no slouch.

The BBL has a "ramp" that makes the resistance less crisp, though it's an excellent lock design in terms of what it's made for.

I prefer not to "fidget" with liner locks/frame locks, since you can close the blade on your thumb if you're not careful enough.

The smock is very fidget friendly, especially if you remove the second detent. Lots of fun.

Sliverax, just about any flipper that also has a functional thumb hole too. Manix 2 isn't bad either, fun lock to fiddle with. Maybe try to find a Sage 3, that's another fun lock.

Second the Sliverax, though I happily thumb flick the heck out of my Kapara most days. Both excellent knives that are also fun.

It might be surprising but I've often found myself fidgeting with the Squarehead. It can almost function as a "worry coin" for me, in the sense that it's small and easy to handle. Even the slow roll open is enough to keep my hands busy.

I may be in the minority, but I prefer the slow, smooth opening of a backlock, with a solid "clack" at lockup, to flicking a compression lock.

The Kapara is a super-fidgety - right out of the box the blade is like a pendulum.
The Manix not so much - I have had two of them and found them as fidgety as a paving stone.

I nearly forgot - the lockless Urban is great for fidgeting. Thumb it open, thumb it back to the half stop, snap it shut, repeat...

I was just going to say, after doing all the scale swaps I've done with my 5 Manix's I've had to fidget them quite a bit in order to get it centered and dialed in just right. I find the Manix MORE fidgety than a compression lock model. I can open and close a Manix faster than say a PM2/Para 3.

+1 for Smock. Not for me, but lots of fun to open and close. Button lock flippers in general are pretty great to play with.

Ain't that the truth.

Compression lock is probably the easiest one to fidget with, as it is the easiets to flick open and one hand drop closed. Lately, I have been fidgeting the Native 5. Opening, closing, switching hands, cutting unecesarily, tossing and catching, stabbing...

I'd suggest a BaliYo. You can fidget with it anywhere and probably annoy people near you less :)
