Imagine if you could have a knife that could either be any steel/handle etc at a moment's notice, but only one design, *or* could change to any design instantly, but only one steel/handle choice, which would you pick?

Definitely one design, but any steel blade and any handle material. ****, I probably wouldn't even change the handle material, just OD Green Micarta.

Probably a PM2, maybe a Stretch 2 with the straight spine.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I would pick just one steel. The design of a knife is 100 times more important than the steel, and this is coming from a steel junkie.

I need edc knives, kitchen knives, hunting knives, fillet knives and field/survival knives. I would never want to do everything with just one type of knife.

Easy choice, one steel/handle material but any design! So much more potential.

As long as I got to pick the "one steel and handle material", I'd rather have knives for every purpose, so I'm with Darby on this one.

For testing steels, the second. For real world use, the first.

I voted for one steel multiple designs. I would guess this "magic knife" could change blade length and thickness as well with the design.

I'd take multiple designs, and since it's magic, the steel/handle would be the vampire blade, Stormbringer, from the Elric series of books. Would be quite the tactical knife.

Definitely one steel/material for the same reasons Darby stated above. The tricky part would be picking that one steel and one material! Micarta or terotuf? Cruwear for all-purpose...or something like LC200n?

The design is, to me, the most important part of the knife. Switching blade steels on the fly however, that would be super neat.

I practically live both these scenarios at the same time since I almost never use anything but the same knife and the same steel. I could probably live the rest of my life with LC200N and be just fine with it, so having any knife design with that steel sounds pretty cool. Some of us have already lived the "any steel in one model" with all the sprint variants coming out. If we're honest with ourselves, steel options really start to be redundant after a while, so many steels are similar enough to each other that you need to jump to far ends of the spectrum to see differences that really matter in real world use, so I don't see much need for infinite steel options in one model because I would just pick the steel I like most and probably never use the others, just like I already do in real life.

I have a magic Knife cupboard that gives me a mix of both choices already

Heap of steel types, Heap of handle materials and heap of designs

Even has a few draws with a heap of sharpening options
