Native 5 LW - nice surprise

#1

Post by Edward_Scissorhands »

I recently ordered a Native 5 LW from Knife Center, and it came today. It was listed as the S30V version, but I ended up getting the S35VN :) This was the original steel, right? And then they changed it to S30 at some point? I guess maybe I got one of the older ones?

Also, I noticed something a little odd with the blade edge. Instead of being smooth like all my other Spydies, the sharpening on this one looks a bit uneven, almost like a scalloped look. Hopefully, you can sort of see what I mean in the pic. Normal?

Looks like it may have been touched up, or at minimum stropped. I get that all the time with my knives.

Thanks. Yeah, mine looks really similar to your pic. Do they sometimes do this at the factory?

Forgot, one other question for everyone: is there a deep carry clip available for this knife? I read that the hole are non-standard, so the usual clips don't fit?

I can't answer your first question but here is a link to a couple of aftermarket clips for the Native LW. I had one on a CS LW Native and it worked great.

I would like to clarify. When I said that I get that all the time, I meant that once I touch up my knives with an ultra fine stone or strop, I develop that look. I have never recieved a brand new knife that looks like that.

You certainly got one of the "older" ones, since the rolling change to S30V started a while ago as far as I can recall

The Native 5 LW I had was also in S35VN, and honestly, I could not notice any difference to S30V (but I don´t know a whole lot about steels and have just basic sharpening skills)
One advantage of S35VN though: Should you want to sell the knife again somewhen, I think it will be easier to find a buyer for the more rare S35VN version - at least I sold mine to a guy who was particullarily looking for that steel in the Native.( Btw, did NOT sell the Native cause I did not like it (I did!), but just cause the Chap LW came along and I liked that one even a bit better).
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Good score! Native 5 LW S35VN was my first Native 5 and it's still one of my most carried/used knives.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

Good to know. I've never had one come out of the box like this, either, so I was a little surprised. Seems to cut fine, so I'm happy :D

For the price right now, I'd seek out a Rex45! No brainer best bang for your buck on this model.

The maroon forum knife is S90V, so you have already branched out from S35VN.

Since REX 45 is basically a somewhat more hardened HAP 40 as far as I know: Just from my experience you´re more than right... great steel (HAP 40, and so most likely REX 45 either)!
