What was the most recent exclusive Military?

#1

Post by SG89 »

Dealers not commissioning more exclusive Military models lately compared to PM2, Para 3, others is interesting... Is the reason because they are too costly/don't sell as well? Or is it some kind of production limitation/schedule issue? Basically, did the Shaman kill future exclusive Military models?

Definitely don't think the Military is quite as popular as the Paras. It's large, has liner lock, and only tip-down carry.

Here's for a Military 2 with a Compression Lock, 4-way position clip, Ranger Green G-10, and 4" of K390!
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Military just isn’t as popular as ParaMilitary2 or Para3. It could be the size or lock. Shaman isn’t large enough to compete with Military. The relatively new Native Chief is more the size of Military but it’s a back lock.

Perhaps a Military with a Compression Lock is what people want.

Military had dry spells with no new models including Sprints/Exclusives from October 2013 to May 2016!

Then, 7 were released from May 2016 to February 2019 all with CQI enhancements but none sold particularly fast:
  1. Military CTS-204P Dark Green G-10 C36GGRP KnifeWorks (USA) - MAY 2016
  2. Military 52100 Black CF C36CFP52100 Sprint (USA) - JUN 2016
  3. Military CPM-S110V Dark Blue G-10 C36GPDBL (USA) - AUG 2016
  4. Military CPM-M4 Natural G-10 C36GM4P BladeHQ (USA) - APR 2017
  5. Military CPM-S90V Black CF TitaniumI Reeve Integral Lock C36CFTIP KnifeWorks (USA) - MAY 2017
  6. Military CPM-REX45 Burnt Orange G-10 C36GPBORE Sprint (USA) - NOV 2018
  7. Military CPM-M4 Black DLC Blade Natural G-10 C36GM4PBK BladeHQ (USA) - FEB 2019
Nothing since February 2019 when the BladeHQ exclusive CPM-M4 black DLC blade with Natural G-10 was released.

The Military is one of my favorites and I still have and use the ComboEdge S30V Black G-10 which I got in September 2005 for $103!

Excellent summary RamZar.
I still would like to see one sprint run linerlock Military, maybe we could get S45VN, just to complete the trio.

I totally agree on a Military CPM-S45VN Forest Green G-10 (Diamond Arc Pattern) Sprint (USA).

I personally very much doubt that "people want a Military with a Compression lock" (I could be wrong of course)

I thinks the reasons why the Military is not as popular as for example the PM 2 are:

- For one just it´s size (more blade than most people need for EDC tasks; not legal in many places; more awkward to carry) - I mean, is there ANY Spyderco of this size that sells really well?!
- And: Precisely BECAUSE we don´t see many sprints / exclusives that a) would sell and b) generally bring the Millie to the minds of people more often

I personally think that a comp. lock Millie would not be a Millie any more, some people would probably even feel as if "Spdycero sold the soul of the Millie" for just another comp. lock knife (nothing wrong with the comp. lock per se, don´t get me wrong!) and specifically for the purpose the Millie was designed for, imho its great linerlock is a better choice than a comp. lock.

That being said: Of course a comp. lock Millie would sell well initially! To people who prefer the comp.lock, to people who are just courious what a comp.lock Millie might feel like, to Millie collectors... but that is true for almost any folder: A new lock would attract a new buyer group, be it a comp. lock Endura, a backlock Caribbean, a linerlock Manix.... but I don´t think that this is reason enough to change the perfectly working and executed lock on the iconic Millie! (A comp. lock Millie as a permanent alternative to the existing model would be a whole different story though)

Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I'm not sure when exactly that one came out but it's a pre-CGI example, so several years for sure. I have one and I like it a lot; it's my only S90V knife.

Wow, so have they sat on it for that long, or were there multiple runs?

They've sat there for that long. I reckon if BBS re-upped, the new iteration would be CQI, but the first run isn't even sold out so... I say this not to dissuade anyone from buying it if they're interested; it's a great knife, particularly for yard work, given the edge retention and corrosion resistance of S90V.

Don't forget the tan handled XHP in there somewhere :)
I own or have owned nearly all the Mille variants and am completely enamored of the current CQI iteration. No thank you to a comp lock! Would not be an improvement for me.
A sprint in SPY-27, S45vn, or the recently discussed SRS-13 would be great. I prefer the stainless steels with a little more toughness quotient.

I cant believe it took me this long to get a military, but I love it. The ergos work better for me than the pm2. So I would like to see more variations of the military as well.

Does anybody know when and what the cqis for the military were?

No comp lock for me either.

A new model of military with the stop lock just like on the Parata I own would be a very powerful lock and compliment the design with distinction.

July 2013. It had a minor CQI (stepped pivot with torx on both sides) over the earlier Military, but not the additional, larger CQI changes introduced in 2016.
