I’ve been carrying my Pingo lately

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Because of the tensions here, lately, I do not want to carry a knife that seems aggressive. Yet, I still need to cut things. I got out my Pingo and started carrying it these last few days. It is not the best, not the worst, slicer. What it is is a capable, non-threatening pocket knife. It won’t pierce, but truthfully I cut more than I need to pierce these days; like this apple:

Image

The knife feels good in the pocket sans clip. It feels good in the hand fondling it. Open, it feels good and is comfortable to use.

I was going to make a clip point out of it, but I’m glad, now, that I was too lazy to do it.

It’ll slice way better once you give it a way thinner edge. Mine all came with the shallowest edges I’ve ever seen. Felt like 45°, and would hardly slice wood. Shaving sharp, but the angle was horribly useless. After fixing, they’re great. Also, the bottom one I nodded in this picture will pierce, while still appearing non threatening.

I was considering picking one of these up not too long ago. I would really like to have an Anso designed Spyderco and BBS had them in stock as recently as a couple weeks ago, but they were sold out when it crossed my mind to go back and pick one up. :(

Next time I see one of these FRN models at a reasonable price, I'll most likely buy it! :spyder:

I like that mod a lot. How much trouble was it to do?

I would be carrying an Urban, but I’m afraid of losing my K390 and the AEB-L is nearly locked up.

It could be done with a sharpening stone. I used Dremel with diamond bits and sandpaper. Not much to take off, really. Just enough to make a bit of point.

Jazz, I think that is a good idea to thin down the edge. How far up did you take it and what angle?

AEB-L is nearly locked up.
Someone else has adopted it, or it is mechanically problematic?

Sometimes Kenny doesn't update his web site, so occasionally it shows in stock when he's really out of stock.

He's great people though. I highly recommend buying from him.

Mechanical. It will hardly open anymore and the pivot screwcannot be loosened.

That’s the trouble, isn’t it! - when you really appreciate something you cannot easily replace.

As I feared. I do wish Sal and Eric would address Maniago’s spinning pivot issues

They’re all about 15° or so now. I freehand, so that’s a guess. Nice and steep. Slice and whittle wood like a dream. I was NOT impressed with their performance at all with the factory edges. Like night and day, the difference.

15* per side, I’m guessing?

I'll try that. I did the Sal thing and did 30* inclusive and then a 40* bevel. It cuts ok, but it could be better. I'll try straight 30*.
