What's your favorite thin & slicey Spydie?

#1

Post by kennethsime »

The other day I sat down and sharpened up the whole family, including my Opinel. No. 08.

I am consistently impressed by this little guy. The Sandvik steel is super easy to touch up, stays pretty sharp, and most of all the blade just zips through cardboard and like a hot knife through butter. I think the biggest key is the super thin blade stock. Obviously, the Opinel design leaves quite a bit to be desired, but I really appreciate the thin & slicey blade.

So, what's your favorite "thin & slicey" Spyderco?

Edit: Wow, sorry guys. Pretty prominent autocorrect in the title; not sure I can edit that. Fixed! Thanks Dan.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

You can edit it in your first post.

Spydercos are often good slicers, like the Chaparral.

Without a doubt, the Chaparral, the stock is thin, the CTS-XHP steel is amazingly easy to sharpen, the handle to blade ratio is amazing, the value in regards to the FRN model is pretty much unrivalled -- I frequently EDC two knives, and if there's a remote chance I might either eat with or prep with what I will have with me, I choose the Chaparral nearly every time... if you like rockin' a larger and a smaller at the same time, I can't think of a better Spydie... anyone else have a different choice for this role that I should know about? :) ;)

The Autonomy. Not a thin blade like the Opinel, but wicked sharp!

The Sprig is probably the thinnest behind the edge of any Spydie I own.

Chaparral and UKPK with their thin blades are a pleasure to use, but my best slicers are flat convexed FFG’s. The shoulders of a V-bevel needs a lot of force to push through rigid material. A convex negate that to a large degree.

I have convexed a few: Military x3, PM2 x2, Stretch, Manix, Caly, Sage, etc. They are all exceptional slicers, comparable with the Nilakka. I maintain 30 deg incl micros.

Sage 2 (left) is probably the one I carry and enjoy the most.

I like the convexed Militaries too (M4, 204P and 52100)! :)

Of the Spyderco folders I use, my two favorite "thin and slicey" ones would be the original S30V CF Chaparral and the Centofante Memory. My absolute favorite, and most used, "thin and slicey" Spydie would be my "4 inch Santokuized" K04 Utility Knife.

The Chaparral is my favorite thin and slicey. Compact, thin and light.

Amalgam. Very tall blade, gets pretty thin behind the edge. I always compare knives to my civivi Baklash because it is a very thin hollow grind. The amalgam matches it easily!

Of all my Spydercos, nothing beats the Gayle Bradley 2.

3 mm blade stock and a good hollowgrind beats even a few thinner FFG blades.... The hollowgrind probably makes for a very low friction against cardboard.

Another vote for the Chaparral... and I'd still love to see an XL version of it with the same, thin stock...

My carbon Opinel is my benchmark sharpening knife. I'm not satisfied sharpening other knives unless I can get them as sharp as that knife.

Spyderco wise I like my Nilakka, Sliverax, Mantra 1, and I'd even include my Caribbeans in this list. I also have a reground Military but that's cheating.

Autonomy 2, with the Police 4 running a close second.

Delicas are really good too.
