So what can you tell me about S45VN?
I'm a simple man; I like my knives green.
What can you tell me about S45VN?
What can you tell me about S45VN?
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Re: So what can you tell me about S45VN?
Larrin has about the most thorough answer you could ask for:
https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/11/01/ ... 5vn-steel/
https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/11/01/ ... 5vn-steel/
In contrast, it looks like the new Spyderco-proprietary steel (SPY27) will have even finer grain than s35vn for tougher/thinner edges, but with reduced wear resistance.S45VN shows improved toughness and corrosion resistance relative to S30V along with similar edge retention. Or slightly reduced toughness relative to S35VN but with improved corrosion resistance and edge retention.

That was just the answer I needed. So like S35VN, but less tough, more corrosion resistant, and higher wear resistance. Sounds like I'm preordering!JacksonKnives wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 3:00 amLarrin has about the most thorough answer you could ask for:

Without having read the article yet (I will!) and without being an expert by any means:
Looks like S45VN is very close to and somewhat between S30V and S35VN?
So if one (like me...) can´t really tell a difference between S30V and S35VN in practical use, S45VN will feel similar to those two too either?

Re: So what can you tell me about S45VN?
It almost sound like it could have been named S32.5V? However, it does sound good to me. :)

Ok, thanks! So for a guy like me it is like if a knife features either S30V, S35VN or S45VN, I´ll take it and be a happy camper in any case... :)

Yup, same here. I'm very happy that Spyderco tries new things and gives me options. I'm also happy that, with the edge geometry you get out of the box, all the steels Spyderco uses work very well.

Ditto, folks. I just like the green handles anyway. :-)

Re: So what can you tell me about S45VN?
One first test-vid of S45VN I found (not a Spyderco knife though). https://youtu.be/PwnGu5kLWnY&t=620s
(Results beginning at around 09:50)
In this particular test it seems to do better concerning edge retention than S30V or S35 VN
Though, the custom knife in his test most likely features a "race car version of S45 VN" as Cedric himself says in the vid (high rockwell (62) and so on), so the results are probably not the same as they will be for "mass production" S45 VN knives (lower rockwell...).

Re: So what can you tell me about S45VN?
Going to say again, I think most knife users will be hard pressed to notice a difference between S30V, S35VN and S45VN.
I am not saying there is no difference at all, but in reality, it is not going to be night and day difference. Like, you are not going to cut the same thing with 3 knives in 3 steels and after a two weeks you are going to evaluate edge retention....
Still, nice addition for steels junkies.

I believe S45VN can also attain a higher hardness, so besides having more carbides, the higher hardness will have an impact on the user's opinion on it. But of course, the regular user can see something in let's say CPM154 at 59hrc as performing better simply due to the fact that they just sharpened it better and gave it a crisper, cleaner edge by mere chance... In the end steel matters only if the other big variables are kept constant (geometry and sharpening skill).
