Spyderco Shaman - Which one?

#1

Post by Unadan »

I think I want a Shaman but am a bit confused about which version I should get? I don't really care about the color of the scales - the steel is more important to me. I would actually prefer this in FRN over G10. I also want non-serrated and non-black coating. Any recommendations are appreaciated!

Not a Shaman-expert or even -owner (though I will be eventually...), but isn't the question rather which version you CAN actually get (anymore)?

That being said: I could handle the S30V "base" model and it would be more than just fine for me (plus: Actually available..)
And it has that great looking stone wash / tumbled blade finish...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

What quality are you looking for in the steel?

Pure wear resistance plus stainless? CPM S90V.

Edge strength and stability with good wear resistance? CPM REX 45.

A decent balance of wear resistance, stain resistance, and strength, with excellent sharpenability? CPM Cru-wear.

The above, but more stainless and a bit less quick on the stones? CPM S30V.

A bit more wear resistance and strength than Cruwear, less corrosion resistance while still being a good sharpening steel? CPM M4.

Let me help you out. The answer to both parts is, yes you do want a shaman, and which one is any one you can get ahold of.

The base model wouldnt be difficult to get. If I were you since there seems to be more sprints and exclusives in the shamans future then I would try to get one of those. If you really like it you could get the base model as a backup/beater.

It is probably my favourite knife to really use/edc anymore, I have 4, soon to be 5, and I seem to enjoy each one more than the last... there are a ton of after market options available as far as scales, deep carry clips, etc.... I think it really comes down to what steel do you want? The good news is there are quite a few options, do you have any experience with or preferences with the steels they come in? s30v, s90v, rex45, m4, 4v, cruwear?

Problem is you're getting pineapple jimping and quirky CBBL lock with the Manix..

Get an S30V if you need one now, or wait for the BBS M390/K390 or DLT M390 exclusives which I’m sure will come.

You have no idea how quick I'd jump on that BBS blue!

I don't consider either of those a problem. What do mean by pineapple jimping on the Manix 2 LW? I also don't know why you consider the CBBL quirky. It's one of my favorite locks.

Nailed it. You really can't go wrong with the standard S30V but you can pretty much take your pick of the sprints and get a great steel regardless of which one you get.

I realise it's taste and preference, but i think the Manix has excessive jimping, and i think the CBBL is like an old Glock trigger, hard and gritty :)

At this time, you're going to have to pay an arm and a leg for any model that isn't the standard S30V.

Thats the other part of this conversation. There is no way you could pick up a non-standard shaman at any where close to what it sold for, or what is a reasonable price. Which is why I said try and wait for a sprint or exclusive. With that said... I have the standard s30v version and it is really good. One of the few folding pocket knives I would beat on relentlessly without a care.

The rex45 sprint should be out in the next couple months (maybe sooner), and it's a safe bet that we'll see a lot more dealer/distributor exclusives this year. If you want something other than s30v/black scales, you won't have to hold out for long.

the standard shaman isn't a reasonable price either. the manix 2 in the same materials is $80 cheaper and even cheaper still in a lightweight model. if you’re bent on the compression lock and g10, the paramilitary 2 in the same materials is still $50 cheaper. “but that’s because they have thinner blade stock,” you say? okay, then try the yojimbo 2 in the same materials and thickness, which is also $50 cheaper. if you really want a shaman, spend the extra money, but i personally don’t think it’s worth it. i’d much rather spend less on a yojimbo or manix and think they’re both better knives than the shaman anyway.

You should get the Shaman in REX 45... and left handed.
When you figure out how to get one, buy two and have one shipped to me.
I'll make it worth your while.

Not to be contrary, but a new base model Shaman can be had on the reg for 130-150 on the secondary market (see deals 2 thread) -- I don't really have a problem with what the regular price is for it, but at those prices, I have a hard time saying it's an apples-apples sort of affair in any respect. I *LOVE* the Manix2 platform, it's my #3 most collected Spydie, but if tough use is called for, I would go to a Shaman (I have 6) before a Manix2 any day of the week, even if it was the same steel called for -- cru-wear, m4, s90v... but hey, just my 2c, and this is just my observation with my use cases, everybody's got different uses/needs/approaches, etc, etc. I feel incredibly fortunate that I have the ability to make those choices on a daily basis, edc rotation and all... :)

Cheers,
