If it is run at any reasonable hardness it should perform noticeably better than VG-10. More carbon, more Moly, more vanadium (2% vs 0.1-0.3%, and added 1% Niobium.

I think it is FANTASTIC that Spyderco is doing this! Same goes for the work they've been doing with BBB. The thing is, the heat treat protocols for different steels as they come suggested from the foundry are not optimized for use as a knife blade steel. Even with steels designed for knife blades, the foundry has not done the extensive testing and experimenting necessary to pin down an optimal heat treat that fully expresses the potential performance of a blade steel.
Up til now, as far as I can tell, a small portion of custom knife makers were the only ones really putting in the work to experiment and test different heat treating procedures to try and find out if there was a better way of heat treating a given steel.
You often hear discussions about the difference in performance, edge retention for example, between a knife steel with a production heat treat and a knife with a custom heat treat. Some of this is due to the limitations inherent to mass heat treating and mass knife production, but I think a lot of it is also because it is a standard practice for companies to heat treat according to the recommendation of the steel foundry. It makes sense. However we are learning that those recommendations are not always the optimal protocols, and custom makers are able to take the time to try different things and figure out what actually yields the best results. Knife companies may not have the time, nor do the foundries, at least not figuring out the optimal heat treats for every possible application.
Spyderco already leads the industry in quality of heat treatment, but if Spyderco is willing to work with some of these custom makers and knife focused metallurgists on actually developing and implementing custom heat treat protocols aside from the foundries suggestions, that could be truly ground breaking for the knife industry, and a monumental benefit to knife consumers and enthusiasts.
Hats off to Spyderco.

I’m very interested to try this one! I’ll probably give it a go in the LW para 3 platform. I will be happy with edge performance anywhere in the S30V/Elmax range. I am more concerned with how the steel performs in toughness, edge stability, sharpening response and corrosion resistance. If it shows any advantages in any or all of those categories over S30V then it will be a huge winner in my book.

Reading about Spy27 some more and looking at the steel composition has me more interested. I don't understand the comparison to VG10 and I think it is entirely bogus. It has a lot more vanadium and with the carbides from the niobium, it should be a whole different animal. Even if it was the same composition as VG10 (like M390, CPM 20V, and CTS 204P), we would have the differences from different processes at the different mills and possibly different heat treats. With a significantly different composition (comparing Spy27 and VG10, which people should stop doing) and a heat treat of its own that is yet to be determined, anything is possible. I am a lot more excited than I was formerly.

Sal himself said it's a variation of VG10. So comparing them seems very justified to me.

I'm quite confused ... SPY27 has 2% Vanadium and 2% Molibden, this alone should put it in a class of it's own ...how could one compare SPY27 to VG10 ?
