Spyderco: What makes the brand so good?

Hello! Ever since I got into the knife community, I have seen one maker all around, in everyones pockets and everyones photos. With its signature hole in the blade, the maker is Spyderco.

Ive never owned one, so Id love to hear your point of view (both owners and non owners) what you think is the reason for the success.

What makes the Spyderco brand so popular and widespread all over the world?

If I could sum it up in one sentence it’d be something along the lines of: A good company that makes a good product that does what it’s supposed to do real good.

Other than that... try one and see for yourself. Not everything is for everyone... but I’ve never handed mine to someone and got a negative response from them.

Besides all the obvious things like knife materials and design, the stand out quality is listening to and responding to feedback. A company that keeps a close relationship with their customers is a rare thing these days.

The uniqueness of virtually all the Spyderco designs as well as the functional aspects of all their knives I believe sets them apart. Not to mention exotic, high end materials and so many different options for whatever type of cutting job you may encounter.

Their customer service is truly second to none. And the overall integrity of the ones who run the company is also unique in today's hostile business world.

Anytime I need any type of knife or sharpening tool I look here first.

- They push the envelope when it comes to introducing new steels to the mass produced market.

- The owner, Sal, is a regular here, and will personally reply to conversations we hold about models we'd like to see Spyderco produce.

- They offer a line of 100% rust proof knives, which is something I've found quite useful.

- They tend to have thinner grinds than their competition, giving them an edge in cutting performance.

- They produce some of the highest quality production lockbacks, and that's my favorite lock for a folding knife.

- I feel the opening hole is easier to use than a thumb stud or nail nick.

- Their ergonomics usually work better for me than other companies.

- They do pocket clips better than other companies. Even their fixed blades have really well done clips.

- Their serrated knives cut very well while being easy to sharpen. Other companies might have easy to sharpen serrations that cut less aggressively (Victorinox) or they may use patterns that are more difficult to sharpen (Cold Steel).

- They do a lot of interesting collaboration models with custom designers.

There are alot of reasons that sets spyderco apart from the rest. But for me, hands down, its the salt series. Nothing on the market competes with it. At all.

my first knife was a spyderco when i was a kid. it was a ladybug, hence the name. i remember thinking it was just the coolest looking knife ever. honestly, i've always like things that were ugly in a cool way and that's what it was to me.

what brought me back to spyderco many years, and other companies' knives, later was the salt line. moving to hawaii, i wanted a knife i could take in the water with me and the pacific salt has been perfect. it also reminds me of my long lost childhood ladybug in a much bigger package. now i also have quite a few more models.

i agree with everyone that mentioned the company pushing the envelope with steels. although i couldn't care less about all these tool steels, i'm glad spyderco does what they do. if they didn't, there wouldn't be a salt line.

this combined with ergonomic designs that beg to be used, the fact that spyderco is responsible for so many innovations that are just commonplace now, and fidget friendly locks like the compression lock, it's no mystery why they have succeeded and continue to do so.

The salt series really is amazing. You just cant find a rustproof/lifeproof folder, as close to zero maintenance as possible, using steel (not titanium, ceramics, dendritic cobalt, stellite, tallonite, others), whose other parts of the design will also hold up to years of neglect and abuse, with a real warranty from a reputable company, for under 100 dollars.

I know about that 1st h1 folder on the market from the other great company, I just dont think because of the design and springs used for that kind of lock, it woyld hold up as well as the other lock designs used in the salt series. Not trying to get into shiny footprints territory which is why I was a bit cryptic with that second part.
