Liquid Cobra is making some knives..

#1

Post by Liquid Cobra »

Hi forum folks. I haven’t been as active on this forum as of late because I’ve been busy trying to learn how to make my own knives. I’ve made 3 so far and I thought I would share them here for anyone interested. Honestly, it is a very fun hobby that I find incredibly rewarding. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have or offer advice if you see room for improvement. And yes, I’m very aware there is a lot of room for improvement. :D

Thanks for looking. The black one was knife number two, the orange was knife number three.

Seems imgur has me on a time limit so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to upload my pictures of the first knife I made.

Hey Cobra, really nice execution on those two, not really my style of knife, but very nice work!
I wish that my grind lines very that even.

Very nice, LC.
How do you shape the blade? Surface grinder?
Pictures of the tools is just as important as pictures of the knives.
Thx.

Let us know when you are ready to take an order in 2020. I might like something along those lines.

Same basic shape as what you are displaying
- steel S35VN or M4 properly heat treated to 61 to 62HRC
- dimensions of a Chris Reeve 7 inch long Green Beret
- micarta handle
- lay back the chisel grind just a tad farther (for thrusts)
- make the knife more pointy (for thrusts)

I'll buy one....

I drew the knife on paper and then cut out the drawing. I traded it onto the steel and then cut out the shape using a portable band saw. I cleaned it up on my grinder, drilled holes with a drill press. I then heat treated the blade using my evenheat heat treat oven. Then back to the grinder for the actual grinds. I cut out the g10 on my portable band saw and then shaped them with the grinder. I cleaned up the scales by hand using sand paper. I hope that all makes sense.

This is my heat treat oven.

And here is the first knife I made. White G10 handle scales with acid washed on the bevel, satin flats.

Again, thanks for looking and the kind words. Maybe I’ll keep this thread updated as I go along.

Excellent work LC! Have you made sheaths for any of your blades? They look like they would be great in the pocket with the right sheath.

By all means, do.
My heat treating consists of heating to cherry red and an oil quench.
Grinders are limited to a bunch of angle grinders and bench grinders.
It's fun to see what others are up to.

The knives themselves aren't close to my cup of tea, but i admire craftsmanship regardless, and have wished many times that i had pursued a careeer in cabinet making or leatherwork (had "dreams" of both when i was younger)
Keep up the knife/scale making, i envy you! :)

Thanks very much! No, I haven’t made any sheaths yet but I plan on getting started soon. Not being able to carry these little guys has been frustrating.
