Determination, performance and ergonomics based designs, the signature spydie hole, this forum and paint attention to customers, steel selection, craftsmanship, the sharpmaker, and more.

Sal, what you are feeling is not disappointment or disapproval from your customer base. It's just that you've spoiled us.

Calypso Jr - was affordable when it came out, vg10, thin full flat grind, great handle ergonomics - everything Spyderco represented in a nice "starter" package

One of Sal's favorites, the Caly 3. I always want to pick something more interesting or exotic, but I cannot get my Hap40 Caly 3 out of my pocket. It has too perfect a balance of size, ease of carry, ergonomics, and performance and it just blows everything else away.

It’s no one product that puts Spyderco on top for me. It’s the company culture of making high performance tools at a fair price, with the main focus being how well they work rather than being pretty for appearances’ sake. Also the culture of transparency and integrity make Spyderco a company I feel good supporting.

Worth remembering, I think, is that Sal and Gail began by wanting to make edges sharp. Consequent what they learned, Glesser blades are always made designed from their edges out. And to this magic is added ergonomic and machining genius. Looks become the result, not the motive, and therein is why I think Spyderco “came out on top”.

When asked, as here, about the Spydies that have won me over, I can’t simply point to one. Now I just offer this prepared text:

“The Military, Stretch, Chaparral, Caribbean, and Shaman are my favorite “Sals” (in order of model #), followed by the Police, Calypso, Pacific Salt, Sage, and Urban (again in order of model #). I’d recommend any of them without hesitation. Same with the PM2 and Chief that Sal and Eric designed together. And I’d also recommend the Manix, Manix2, and Lil’ Native. They are the “Erics” I have and really really love.”

BULL ONEY!! That's just utter non-sense. Sal Know's he's at the top of his game in the Commercial Knife industry. He may not sell as many units as Buck, Case or any of the old Hardware store knife companies that have been here for many decades before Spyderco was even a company. But the overall quality of his products and the respect he has garnered is at the top of the industry all the way. Super high quality standards is what drew me to Spyderco's products to begin with. And they just continue to get better.

I just wish they would bring back some of their old school models with model materials and better blade steels. Who knows Spyderco might just find their equivalent to the BUCK model 110. And a really ramped up C-36 Military might just be the one too.

LONG LIVE THE GREAT SPYDER FACTORY  !!!

Ever feel like you can't come out on top no matter what you do?

sal

I thought it would be good to list the models we like the most and how Spyderco came out on top.

For me it was the Gayle Bradley 1 that hit it out of the park
Still my number 1 Spyderco and folder period.
Have plenty of other Spyderco’s and other brands but this knife still makes me look in awe every time I carry it.

Thanks Sal for making it happen

I’ve said it a few times here, but will gladly post again. Spyderco has come out on top for me, not for any one specific model, but because of the exceptional customer service I have ALWAYS experienced from them. I always feel like the only customer of the day when I talk to ANYONE in Golden. But one particular experience in early 2018, when most of the crew was in Amsterdam, is when Spyderco absolutely came out on top. They proved their loyalty to me on that day, so I find it quite difficult to not be loyal in return. I am truly their customer for life. Thank you “L.S.” ;) !! For not only being there that day, but for genuinely listening to me, and making me feel so gosh dang important. :spyder:

And also, my fav model is a toss up between the Native5 and the Wolfspyder. If I could only choose one or the other, I’d pick none, I’m done with knifes if I can’t have both.

Me too Jim!

If a better large folder exists I certainly haven't found it.

Anyhow, revision 2.0 is evidently in the works but from where I'm standing improving the existing Military is akin to drawing a moustache and glasses on the Mona Lisa with a Texta Colour, stepping back and saying "That's Better!" but, ay, what do I know? :)

Spyderco was love at first site for me. When I first got into the hobby, I googled "best pocket knives" or something, and the Spyderco's on the list just jumped right out at me. Then reading their performance oriented blurbs about each knife struck a cord. Next I started getting into blade steel, and the love affair just kept right on going.

Para 3 was the first knife I got in hand.

I came to know Spyderco from the medium benchstone. It was recommended to me by a knife store nearby, and it felt great.
I discovered their kitchen knives soon after, but only found out about the folders a few months ago. Tittered on the edge of buying one for a bit, and handled a few. Settled on the PM2 because of the size, the ergos and the lock, a serious purchase considering my most expensive folder up to now was ~60$.
I think the company's greatest strength is the variety and quality of execution of the product. Sure, they're not as popular as more traditional designs or cheaper or more aggressive knives and designs but they feel great. And that's what I want in a tool I use everyday.

The HAP40 Stretch and the GB1 really do it for me.

And the Superblue Delica and K390 Urban and Police 4.

I suppose I could go on, but I can't think of any other maker that's even close to putting out knives like that.
