Bought 450 rounds of NATO 124 gr. 9mm target ammo yesterday, a little pricier than 115 gr. but I carry 124 gr. +P in my 9mm carry pistols.

2011 was the heart of the ammo shortage. You couldn’t even buy .223 ammo where I was living then. I couldn’t find most calibers anywhere. It even got hard to buy primers! If someone was buying .223 for 19 cents at that point they were lucky. That was about what it cost before the shortage though. Unfortunately the prices have never come back down. Once they figured out that we would pay more why would they lower them?
2010 to early 2011 the local stores had .223 for $3.99 a box. I bought a few, but sold my rifle a little later.

Yeah. I was paying $30 for 200 round battle packs of excellent unopened German and Austrian 7.62x51N and $4 to $8 for 9mm Nato boxes of 50 rounds. Some can be attributed to inflation but not all. The 9mm does get close around here on occasion. 22LR is the one that went up and won't come down. It sold for $7 per 500 round boxes prior to the huge ammo shortage. 22LR was the one that continued to be in short supply long after everything else had caught up to demand.

That ammo shortage that hit the whole country was unlike anything I have seen in my lifetime. There seemed to be no valid reason for it at the time and the usual excuses didn't come across as believable to me.

Still haven't figured out what was the cause of that ammo shortage. It sucked though.
I have a few competing theories.
I'll say this though, here in Oklahoma, ammo is wiped out at Walmart or was recently. As soon as Wal-Mart said no more handgun ammo, everyone rushed over and bought everything. Nothing got to be clearanced. It doesn't make sense either, it's lile these people don't know you can buy ammo literally anywhere else.

Went to Walmart yesterday and all the handgun ammo as well as the .223/.556 ammo was on clearance. It sounds like Walmart is only going to sell hunting ammo now.

I live in a rural area and Walmart is one of the only places to get ammo and it is definitely the cheapest. This kinda sucks.

Is FMJ the standard for .223 plinking ammo in the US? Most ranges here don't allow it, at least in the state of Australia I'm in.

I wish we could get .223 rounds for 30 cents apiece here. I usually reload mine. Can't remember the price I paid for the last lot of factory loads I bought. I think it worked out about $1AUD a round - roughly 80 US cents at the time. That was for Normas though.

That definitely does suck. All the ranges want about $5 more per box for their cheapo reloaded 9mm than Walmart did for Federal.

There was a massive run on ammo back then that was created by media hype etc...

Just like all of the other ones were people believe it and rush out and by like crazy, guns/ammo etc.

I still can't believe people actually buy into that crap...

Kinda like the Earth is flat...… When the Reactors got flooded in Japan and all the people went out and bought duct tape, plastic sheeting and Iodine..... Then there is the Ice Age, Global Warming and now climate change and the Oceans rising....

The Earth is covered by 2/3rds water, it would take one heck of a lot more water than both the polar caps melted combined to even raise the level 1" world wide...

We have a better chance of a Comet or Asteroid slamming into the Earth in our life times than any of those supposed media hyped things ever happening... At least something that humans would be around to actually see anyway...

Just bought out all the 9mm at my local Walmart....a whole two boxes of 150 round NATO Winchester. Not really a spectacular deal though at 17 cents a round but I figured if they're not carrying it anymore it's at least cheaper than the range.

I used to love shooting a 12 gauge shotgun as a young kid, call it a fun pain, still love shooting my 590! I always knew the absolute brute power and energy they provided, even as a 12 year old kid, but it took until I was around 16 to REALLY understand that power! Me and my now BIL were shooting slugs into an old (very stout) construction dumpster, mind blowing the destruction those slugs cause!

This is what I live by.

Good ol pump action shotguns. They’re just plain fun to shoot, and do everything well for me from hunting, to home defense/truck gun, to fun. Cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, stupid easy to maintain... They cover it all. I love my 12 and 20 ga. boomsticks

Not to mention not much is going to get back up after being hit with 12 Gauge 00 Buckshot. Especially in range...

I’m a mossberg 500 guy, only because I had a pinned in ejector spring break on me... the 500 uses a simple screw. AND I prefer the tang safety.

I still like 870’s and most people probably won’t experience that but... I did. I’ve actually bought a few since then but that’s always in the back of my mind.
