What models would you like to see with the side button compression lock like the Smock

As a new owner of a Spyderco Smock I find the feature it has I like the most is the implementation of the compression lock using a side button.

There are many models I can see that this would work well with.

This morning I was thinking you know this lock style would work great with my Native Chief, and got to wondering which models others might think it would work well on. I was also thinking of the Military and PM2 and para3. This in my opinion is the way forward with the compression lock much better than it's standard implementation.

So anyway lets give Spyderco some feedback on this lock design implementation what does everyone think?

I would rather see it implemented into new models where it is part of the design process opposed to just slapping it on any current compression lock.

I’m sure it could work on most, if not all, compression lock knives but there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken just because you can.

The simplicity of the compression lock is part of what makes it so great, in my opinion.

I wouldn't want to see it on the Para 2, because I'm more likely to crank harder on that one and wouldn't want to risk accidental release.

I'm left-handed, and the standard implementation of the compression lock works well for me. I haven't tried a Smock, but my concern is that the button release may be less lefty friendly.

I love the button compression lock on the Smock, but the less than stellar ergos - compared with so many other Sypdercos that fit my hand like a glove - have kept me from really warming up to the design as a whole. I would love to see a BCL on any existing compression lock model really, so long as its implementation did not have a negative impact on existing ergos..

Blades we love make a PM2 "Ultra" that is basically a left hand pm2 and add a button for the lock. It looks great. Probably pricey.

It would be nice for the knives that have minimal cut outs to access the compression lock. Like the ikuchi. Sliverax. Maybe lil native.

Every compression lock model for me. As a lefty with pretty big hands, the button is especially beneficial for models with limited access, as foofie mentioned, or those without particularly grippy scales (i.e., I've come close to dropping my BHQ Shaman several times with its smooth G10 scales). I've found that the compression lock implementation in the PM2 and Para 3 are perfectly fine for leftys, given the cutout and the traction on the scales. However, there are a lot of compression lock models that are basically unusable without a button. It seems to me that there is very little given up to use the button (aside from possibly the requirement for a cutout in the blade), and a massive benefit for ergonomics by adding one. I have seen some concerned with debris possibly getting caught in the button, but the same could just as easily happen with any other compression lock (or Axis lock, back lock, etc.).

Captain Boring here.. I say none. It's not like it's a revolutionary revelation in the history of locks (IMO)
(Don't get me wrong i think it's pretty neat) but let the Smock be THE one with button comp. lock :)

I'm kinda with you here. I love it, and find it so much nicer to operate than a regular comp lock (which isn't difficult or bad by any means, but you get that hit on the finger tip as the blade closes with so many models, and I've been pinched by a comp lock before). Without trying it in action, it's hard to say if I'd worry about accidental disengagement, but I've never had that problem on the smock. Then again, I don't put that knife to really hard use.

In regards to almost dropping the Shaman, try to close it "backlock style"-- i am a righty, but can also do this with my left (though more awkwardly).

What I mean is hold it behind 50/50 choil, in a hammer or saber grip, then use your thumb to release the lock tab. Let the choil fall to your index finger, then roll the knife in your palm and close the remainder of the way, once everything is clear.

I'm going to say none. I have no interest in the button lock, and I haven't bought a smock simply because of the button lock. IMO the compression lock is perfect the way it is, and if more models were updated with a button lock I'd stop buying them too.

At this point I would say none. The Smock has not been in circulation long enough to get some solid feedback. I tend to favor Walker liner locks and a compression locks but under normal usage I may only open and close a knife two or three three times a day so the lock in terms of closing or disengaging is really not a deal at all.

Not very interested. I enjoy the simplicity of the compression lock, as well as its security. I'm sure most folks who have used button-operated knives for any length of time have experienced an unintended button press. What I'd REALLY like to see are more left-handed compression locks.

I personally am not interested in comp. lock knives, regardless if with or without button.

Still, I think the comp. lock is an ingenious idea, and I can see that the "button" maybe could solve two of its (very minor, but still) drawbacks in use:

1. Operation with gloves or cold, numb hands could be improved, since the button is maybe easier to hit than the lock tab??

2. Maybe the small risk of dropping the knife is further decreased, when while closing you're pinching it between button and handle instead of between lock tab and handle?
