All I can say is : bummer ! You ruined this cool design... at least for me :(

P.S I allways thought this entire Efficient family deserves a better steel and now this !

Not too surprising, really, as the Efficient is a bit portly too.

However, on the Efficient you can remove the backspacer and there are factory standoffs. It may be that the Emphasis will have similar construction, and could also shed some weight.

Does that complexity decrease the simplicity? Not at all.

I will be getting one of these, hoping the backspacer can easily be removed just like on the Efficient.

I will be following this thread and people’s reports to see if this is the case and then I may try to pick one up.

I questioned Eric about the weight at Blade show and he said it was basically targeting people that liked a more robust feeling knife. While I'm anti-pocket bricks, there are weirdos that like a heavy knife and think weight equals quality. I took the spacer out on my efficient, it's dead weight. I'll probably end up with an Insistent and skip the big guy.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

I like my Efficient, now that I lightened it. It was way too back heavy.
*Removed the filler and the lanyard tube.
*Used a small disk and removed a substantial amount of of liner material.
Pretty nice knife now, love the shape.

You could do the same for the Emphasis. :)

It may make you feel better to know? That mine arrived weighing 5.15oz. :D

I'm sure that someone, at some point. Will end-up offering an aluminum back-spacer for these.

I think so... compared to a military that’s a full oz lighter. let’s take it down to an Endura, like 2 oz lighter, still more blade. I won’t even go down to the pacific salt, my personal favorite. It’s even lighter than the first 2 knives. I know, I know... the price points are weigh off here (get it?) in comparison. These 3 are my go to carry knives for this reason, lots of blade, light weight.

I get the point of this knife. Your average joe would pick up an emphasis and an Endura and take home the emphasis cuz it “feels more solid” and it’s not “plastic”. But for some of us... 5.2 is a pocket brick for what we’re getting.

I think spyderco has PLENTY of lightweight options, but that's just me. I wouldn't want every model to be as light as possible, just like I wouldn't want all the knives to have the same steel, same blade shape, same color, etc. Variety is part of what makes spyderco great and the emphasis has a lot going for it IMO.

I don't see 5 oz being heavy, personally. No bother.

I'm confused. Everyone seems to love the Shaman, which is also 5.2 oz. and has the exact same blade length. The Emphasis is even a little longer than the Shaman in overall length. 5.2 oz seems fine to me. It's a large folding knife.

Some users were reporting it was on closeout at Walmart, I assumed it had been discontinued
