Spyderco is the only company that works with cutting edge steels. Whatever comes of this, I hope that I like the design and have an income to be able to buy it.

I'd love to get my hands on some 15v in any model, but gettiing it on Triple B's first folder design would be absolutely perfect.

Cleans up nice. I'll continue testing with the remaining unfinished knives and update the thread.

Look forward to seeing some CPM 15v Sal

Hey Shawn, could you elaborate a bit on 15V Vs Maxamet? What are the similarities and differences between these two, or why would you pick one over the other?

He said on instagram he'll bring 3 knives in 15v, rex 121 and maxamet to Bladeshow and explain what each steel does best. Hopefully there will be a video for us on the other side of the blue marble.

I think raw cutting performance with optimal heat treat it goes
1. REX 121
2. 15V
3. Maxamet

When it comes to apex stability and strength 15V is better than both REX 121 and Maxamet. Probably toughness too. That's just what I've gathered, could be wrong. And maybe 15V has the longest lifetime of slicing ability when you take working edge into account, with all those vanadium carbides.

Hmm, well Maxamet is out when it comes to edge retention (out of these 3 steels only of course :D ), so its a fight between Rex 121 and 15V. If both are close in hardness, I have no doubt that 15V would be the edge retention winner in pure cutting power even if it has significantly less carbide volume (almost 1/3rd less), but vanadium is king and with such a massive amount it most likely has a dramatic effect compared to any other steel used to date by knife production companies.

Rex 121 will out cut both.

15v and Maxamet could be more competitive with each other depending on the hardeness and how they are sharpened and tested.

Maxamet runs harder than 15v.

15v can get close to Maxamet's hardness.

15v had more Vanadium carbide and slightly more volume.

Maxamet is mixed with softer M6C tungsten Molybdenum carbide to peak its total volume just under 15v but has some attributes to keep the matrix harder.

On paper

1.Rex121
2.15v with custom HT
3 Maxamet

Or
1.Rex121
2.Maxamet
3.15v industry standard HT from data sheet.

It's both complex and simple.

If the matrix is harder it holds the Carbides better and resists wear better in controlled testing.

I liked the 15v a lot because it's finer structured than Rex 121 and has harder Carbides than Maxamet.

We tested 15V and don't think anyone would complain about it.

I read over the entire thread about a week ago, but I don’t recall whether this was stated or I just assumed - can anyone with a better memory than my own remind me whether this will be a folder or a fixed blade, so that I don’t have to read through the entire thing again?

Folding knife. Need something to kick the K390 Police 4 out of my pocket.
