Crucible and Niagara
Crucible and Niagara
We just spent a few days with Crucible foundry watching them pour CPM steels. Great info. Also spent some time with Niagara Specialty Metals which does the rolling. Also great stuff. I'd like to take my hat off to these folks. They make great steel and roll to tight tolerances. They have a great crew that works really hard every day. Certainly worth our appreciation.
We discussed many new grades for the future. Exciting stuff. I'll try to get Kate or Kristi to post some pics.

Re: Crucible and Niagara
Cool! Does "new grades" mean new steels, or upgraded (improved} qualities of existing steels / compositions?

Re: Crucible and Niagara
The guy I talked to at Niagara ( can't remember his name anymore) was a really great guy to talk to.Helpful and knowledgeable and good at answering questions. From a practical perspective if it wasn't for them rolling all these steels we like so well into knife thickness and selling small to medium amounts for knifemaking our hobby would look nothing like it does now. Got to appreciate what they do!

Awesome. I bet they had a hard time keeping you behind the yellow line.
Re: Crucible and Niagara
Sal you've actually spoiled us afis with such a wide array of great specialty steels for your awesome knife designs. And believe me we all really appreciate it. It's putting many American knife companies in a real competitive scenario which will ultimate produce super high quality hardware across the board IMO.
As these steel companies gain more knowledge on heat treatments and quenching methods it's going to be very interesting to see what the next advancements in the field are going to be like. Right now Spyderco's main line "user" steels like VG-10, S35V are better than most company's top of the line units. Keep up the great work because we really appreciate it and I see your fan base just getting bigger as time goes forward.

Re: Crucible and Niagara
Steel CQI?
Re: Crucible and Niagara
I'm surprised Crucible doesn't have their own rolling mill, or do they and just not roll out to desired specs?
Re: Crucible and Niagara
Hi Larrin,
I'm sure you'll hear more soon.
Yup. steel CQI.
