Alternative to Zip-Tie Wave - Kwik Thumb Stud

I haven't been on the forum for awhile, but I've been lurking a bit. I had some login issues, but TazKristi got it all squared away! It's good to be back!

I have stumbled onto a slightly more elegant temporary wave solution than the tried-and-true ziptie wave fro Spydercos.

For years, the Kwik Thumb company has made brass attachments that secure to knives with only thumbnail grooves, such as a the Buck 110. They make both thumbstuds and bars that install onto the spine of the knife and tighten down with set screws to create a fully removable opening device.

I got a brass Kwik Thumb Stud and installed it inside the Spyderhole of my Caly3 as shown below:



I am happy to report that the stud works adequately as a wave device. It is not quite as grabby as a chunky square ziptie head, but it is definitely easy to catch on the edge of your pocket.

I am considering trying to grind some of the extra material off of the stud with a dremel. I would take off the knurled section inside the thumbhole, flatten the forward face of the stud and round the edges on the top of the thumbstud.

I used those as a thumb stud years ago, didn't know they still exist.

There's a company called 5x5 solutions that makes an attachable wave. No experience with it but I believe Michael Janich was testing it on his Yojimbo at one point.

That's the whole point of this mod - it is completely removable if you don't like it.

Those look to be a vast improvement over the "Fang" made by Wise Men Company.

The machining on the 5x5 "Pickpocket" is extremely well done and they produce them for specific Spyderco models. I've found them to work very well and many of my MBC guys swear by them.

I have these on my 110's; might give it a shot this weekend.
There are other solutions purposefully built to act like a wave, so you might want to look into those

I rather like my zip ties. They're super cheap and readily available and are in my experience more effective than a real wave hook and when I'm sick of looking at them I can twist them off with my multitool.

That looks ridiculous. Also probably weighs more than alternatives.
