Spyderco Pocket Knives

Post by Doc Dan »

Spyderco does pocket knives better than other companies, not that other companies make poor products. It’s just that I think Spyderco does it best.

Spyderco makes a pocket knife for every occasion and to fit most people. I do not have every model they make, nor was there room to fit all of my collection. But, here is a representation.

I forgot to take the Dragonfly Salt out of my pocket. It is on of my favorites. For a slip joint I quite like the Urban Light Weight.

The Nisijin is a beautiful knife. I wish they’d make more.

I recently saw a Nishijin Dragonfly for sale at one of the dealers but I can't remember where now. I briefly considered buying it but the price seemed high and I already have the blue Nishijin Cricket.

And yes Dan, Spyderco does do pocket knives right. Something for everyone.

If you look at the range and quality of Great Eastern Cutlery pocket knives, and consider that they are hand made in Pennsylvania I would say that they are making the best pocket knives available today.

Nice collection, Doc, no doubt!
But with the Chap (!) being the largest, I just have to ask: Where are the normal-sized ones?! ;)
Maybe another pic?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I reeeeeally regret not getting the #43 Oregon Trapper in jigged Brazilian cherry with the beaver tail. It came out when I first heard about the company and I didn't know they were all very limited releases :( None of the others have interested me as much as that one. I'm from PA, too, so I'd like to get one eventually.

I think it's a little apples and oranges though.. IDK but i haven't seen any GEC's in a "modern" locking blade folder style?
Again, i haven't seen an awful lot of GEC knives but every one i've seen has been old school knives with carbon steel blade, so i guess it is a question of defining "best"

GEC does not make modern knives in modern materials with one hand opening. Blade play has been an on again off again problem too.

I love Spyderco designs and quality. For the same price as a traditional I get a great knife with all the bells and whistles, and many times actually cheaper.

I see GEC pocket knives as way better versions of what my grandfathers and even my father carried.

Not a thing wrong with many things old-school, GEC included, but Spyderco does remarkable things with small folders in ways I much prefer.

Yeah, there are some great attributes to Spyderco pocket knives. Lots of people must agree because Spyderco keeps producing more and more.

Yeah, I agree that Spyderco and GEC are apples to oranges. Both of these companies make up 80% of my collection. I have quite a bit of both. With GEC you're getting handmade (not custom though), you're getting the pleasure of a hafted knife, you're owning something that has soul, and you're getting Peter's Heat Treated 1095 which performs very well for what it is.
Downsides are limited production (this year has been an exception) and an occasional proud tip (not sticking out but I'd still like many of them to be lower). Never had blade play.

With Spyderco you get unique designs and either good stainless or boutique steels.they make great users and some are flashy. The warranty is better too.

In the pocket knife size both are easy to carry. GEC will have more resale value but GEC knives will look like **** long before your spydie will. Spydies have a 200% better edge out of the box. GEC takes more maintanence. More people will compliment your GEC. GEC still knows how to hide pins. If you're using your knife often, the life of your spydie will surpass your GEC. GEC in my experience doesn't do locking knives well.

So yeah, give or take. I love both.
