RIP Pacific Salt
RIP Pacific Salt
Well, I lost my new Pacific Salt overboard yesterday. Something caught the pocket clip and sploosh, it was gone. Many centuries from now a rust free knife will be sitting on the bottom of the Savannah River. I only sharpened it twice and was impressed with H1's edge retention (serrated).
I have to remind myself to adjust my pocket clips so that they don't hang on stuff as easily. On my byrds, I just ground them down. It made them a royal PITA to clip into my pocket, but I knew I would not lose them. It's convenient when you have spyderco models in which the clips can be swapped with byrd clips. I wouldn't want to permanently alter my stock spyderco clip, but with the Pacific Salt that seems like the only option.
Now I'll have to find another one, but I'll probably wait a bit. I'll probably end up selling a knife to justify another purchase. At least it wasn't the Shaman, Haha. To everyone working on the water or in an environment where you could lose an expensive knife, be careful!

Re: RIP Pacific Salt
I feel your pain. I've lost 2 Dragonfly Salts to the deep. I just got my third one in the mail. I'm looking at tethers and floating fobs for when I'm on or around the water. The Pacific Salt is a great knife, I have one too and I carry it quite a bit around the yard for trimming plants and on the water for fishing.
Re: RIP Pacific Salt
man, that’s rough. spydercos certainly aren’t disposable. have you considered some kind of tether? maybe you could run some paracord through the lanyard hole and around a belt loop so that it’s not gone forever if you drop it or it pops out of the pocket, but you can still reach what you need to cut while it’s attached. just an idea.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Re: RIP Pacific Salt
I've lost my fair share of Spyderco's to the deep. It's never a good feeling, especially when it means you're going to be without a knife for a bit.
I think those little floats you can attach to your keychain will work too. Most of them are good for a couple pounds, so they should have no problem holding up a knife that only weighs a few ounces.

That’s sad, man. One day, a thousand years from now, someone will be excavating the site, find the knife, swear humans coukd nit make such a thing that does not rust and is still sharp, and declare it proof of aliens from another planet.

Re: RIP Pacific Salt
Arrgh, that sucks man. Sorry to hear that.
Yeah, it's cool to think that it'll be as sharp and intact as the day you lost it, if someone ever finds it again and cleans it up a bit.
I guess the Salts wouldn't be magnetic enough to be picked up by magnet salvagers.

Such a bummer! As others have said, there are floating keychains out there. My father in law uses one for his fishing boat knife...not the coolest looking thing, but better than dropping $150 overboard. So sorry for your loss!

I lost my Tasman on Vero Beach. I'm sure someone with a metal detector has found it by now.

Re: RIP Pacific Salt
Condolences on your lost knife. I just got a Pacific Salt serrated last week. Like you I have sharpened it a couple of times and am impressed. It is a sad thing to lose such a good knife.
When si hike steep terrain I tether all pocket essentials to my belt or belt loops: knife, compass, survival kit. I think I’ll learn from your experience and make a tether for my PS as well and also get one of those squishy foam key ring floats.
I used a Sharpmaker white rod at 30 degrees on both sides at 3:1 ratio of strokes. The strokes on the flat side seemed to smooth out the points a bit. Now it can slice over ripe tomato like crazy thin.

Sorry for your loss.
I’ve never lost a knife (knock on wood). When I go somewhere where a knife may have a good chance of being irretrievably lost, I tie some paracord through the lanyard hole (if the knife has a lanyard hole) and connect it to a belt loop.

Re: RIP Pacific Salt
Bummer.
Interesting though: say in a couple hundred years it will find its way back to surface (miracles do happen!), will there be rust? Will the edge still be sharp? What will the Overlords cut first? :D

Re: RIP Pacific Salt
Clearly, the FRN on Salts should have buoyancy sufficient to keep the blade afloat, and have a water-activated beacon so the knife can be found in the dark. :D
Moreover, the blade should be a wharncliffe.
Sorry for your loss.
For what this knife is and does, is it not amazing that it costs relatively little?

I’ve gifted my friend a salt 1 and a caspian salt and they ended up somewhere at the bottom of the Pacific years ago.
