I started physical therapy

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I just had my second session of physio. OMG! It is really painful. It is not so bad doing the exercises. About an hour after my whole body aches, but it is worse from my fingers up my arm, across my back, down the other arm to the fingers. I was not prepared fir that....pain in my injured arm and hand, yes. The rest was a painful surprise.

I’m still months from playing my mandolin or riding my motorcycle again.

Been There!! Done That DOC!! In the past 5 years I've had 3 knee replacements ( one went bad in 4 years), a shoulder replacement, a hernia operation and corrective surgery on my left foot with the right foot coming up shortly. I once thought those physical therapists were sent by the CIA to extract information from me   Needless to say I've learned the Webster's definition of "pain" :o
No I'm here to tell you that growing old is truly an endurance sport :D

Yeah, at my age getting over something like this is no joke.

Wishing you all the best in your recovery, Doc Dan. I wonder if it’s your brachial nerve that is being affected(?).

I’ve never been through that much PT. A hernia operation last year was the only surgery I’ve had in 30 years. It was the same hernia that was operated on when I was a toddler, back in the mid-1960s. This time they did a laparoscopic surgery. If the fix this time holds as long as the first one did, I should be set for life, at least on that hernia. The only other non-hernia surgery I’ve had was to remove my wisdom teeth in ‘88.

That’s the hope. The doc says I may never have full range of motion, but I am hopeful that I will.

I'm learning that getting old isn't for the meek, especially if you're injured. At 52, I'm not even in the running yet!

Always maintain the *expectation* that you will. There are instances I know of where doctors have told patients they would never be able to do _____ again, (or most likely never will); and in several instances, the patients, through self-determination, have proven them wrong.

Thank, you all.

I am already doing better than expected, so that is encouraging.

Remember to ice it Doc. It's good for inflammation.

My last rehab was on a shoulder rebuild and the therapist was a beautiful blonde. Man did she work me over hard! :) The more pain she put me through the more I was finding her attractive. :o That messed with me worse than the pain did. :D

Doing all the PT (and more) is the key. My husband had surgery for really advanced tendonitis in his elbow last year and docs told him not to expect full recovery. But he went nuts doing all the PT exercises and stretches and is now almost back to normal. Even his doc was surprised at his recovery. You can do it!

Thanks! My physiotherapist was surprised yesterday at how much I had improved. I am encouraged.
