Best knife design and steel pairings?
Best knife design and steel pairings?
The 4V lil native to me was a weird combo - a tough steel in a tiny folder seems odd, but I guess you can really go ham on it
So which steel/model combinations do you feel bring out the best in each other?
Like the h1 hawkbills in serrated - tough, holds a good edge- the rust proof is the icing

Re: Best knife design and steel pairings?
I'd say the Police 4 and K390. The Police 4 would be fine in vg10, as we'll soon see with the lw model, but K390 just elevates it to a whole new level. It's still surprisingly slicey for a knife of its size. K390 adds a level of toughness that really brings out the utility of the blade.

Re: Best knife design and steel pairings?
4V is more an all around steel than a “tough” steel. And high toughness steels that can be taken to high hardness are very good for thin blades.GarageBoy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 4:49 pmThe 4V lil native to me was a weird combo - a tough steel in a tiny folder seems odd, but I guess you can really go ham on it

Tank knife design and build with great steel choice.
( not a knife you would use around salt water anyway )

Hundred Pacer and CTS-XHP. One of my favorite designs, in one of my favorite steels. I am also liking CTS-BD1N, and think it is a good combo with the Para 3 LW.
I don't get people who only carry one knife
Re: Best knife design and steel pairings?
I'll put in for a few (they made the list because they have a little extra something to them, I'll call it MOJO):
1) Chaparral & CTS-XHP (and I''ll add a third dimension; carbon fiber handle)
2) Delica & VG-10 (FRN)
3) UK PenKnife & BD1N (FRN)

Re: Best knife design and steel pairings?
I think any of the hawkbill designs in H1 are a near perfect matchup of design and steel given the steel’s extreme toughness. I also believe that lc200n is a good matchup for the Waterway design. Actually, pretty much any of the Salts that were designed specifically to be ocean use knives have a good steel to design matchup.

Re: Best knife design and steel pairings?
Stretch and Kiwi are the Spyderco models I like the most, Kiwi only ever came in VG-10 and it's also my preferred steel for the Stretch as everything else it's been offered in had less rust resistance.

Re: Best knife design and steel pairings?
Caly 3.5 with the slick carbon fiber handle and a VG10 blade dropped in. Ergonomic, easy to maintain a quality edge, deep carry pocket clip that doesn't even look like a knife, and easy in and out of the pocket. With its pinned construction and backlock, I can clean this knife without worrying about water and chemicals seaping into hard to reach places. One screw(pivot) is all is needed to completely disassemble.
