Steel preference for Caly 3.5 LW?

#1

Post by Catamount123 »

Although there’s no official word, it looks like, from what Sal has posted, the Caly 3.5 LW will be made in Taichung, Taiwan. If this is the case, the standard steel will likely change from VG-10. We could be surprised, but I believe CTS-XHP and S30V are the most likely candidates. Please vote for your preference between these two, if you have one.

I voted no preference because I'll get one either way. If I could pick one it would probably be XHP but that's really only because I have a lot more S30V at the moment. I like 'em both just fine so either way I'm good.

What I'd really like is if they use a handle color other than black. Don't mind black but I already have several with black' I'd much prefer some color.

If Taichung, why not M4? :)

Totally agree with you, but that’s another windmill to tilt at ;)

I'm hoping its the same gray as the Chaparral LW.

XHP between the 2 you provided, but I'd take 4V before anything if going with a steel that has been used in Taiwan before.

That said, LC200N Salt would really be my first choice, but they never go straight to Salt.

I voted XHP. But really, anything other than S30V.

I'd say LC200N, but I know that won't be in the cards for the first run(even thoough the name Calypso has a strong island vibe).

Why just the two choices? Is that because these two steels are the most common out of Taichung?

Didnt Sal say something about making it in K390 on an older caly LW thread? I'll see if I can find the quote. Think it was on his Bombshell thread

I thought it would be made in Golden? Hmmm....

What about BD1N? Keeps with the low cost theme of the LWs.

Any news on K390 Caly 3.5 LW? :D
Hey Woodpecker,

It's in-the-works. We're creating tooling. Once it's nailed down and ok, we'll consider steels. It's screw construction.

Hi Aquaman,

Once the 3.5 is in production, we'll consider your request.

I would be fine with that but I'm not sure that would bring down the cost considerably. And you likely will have a lot of AFI's that would want a "better" steel on the model.

Really prefer the LC, but will pick this one up regardless of steel.

Between the two, it doesn't really matter to me. I like Caly enough that I would buy the LW version with either steel.

I voted xhp, and would be most excited for that, but would be happy with s30v or bd1n for that matter. There are other steels I'd prefer, but I want the model pretty bad, so anything other than vg10 and I'm in.

I also agree with the suggestions of a handle color other than black... the Chap FRN gray would be great.

I would also be into an LC200n variant.

BD1N or VG10. I think something economical and easy to sharpen would be a good steel for the first run. If sales are there, follow up with more exotic alloys.

That's what I thought when I heard there would be a LW Sage. I thought the Para 3 LW was ushering in a new line of knives with BD1N and FRN scales that would make a larger selection of models more accessible to people getting into Spydercos. But then S30V was announced as the steel for the LW Sage. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
