Sante Fe Stoneworks Spydercos

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

Hi folks,

I cannot remember asking this, but my wife is looking for an anniversary gift for me (I do not wear jewelry). Does anyone have any experience with/own anything from Sante Fe Stoneworks? I can have a Dragonfly made up very reasonably from them, but do not know about the quality or durability. How do they look? Any pics to share?

Thanks

Doc

I’ve handled and seen some in some jewelry shops before. I don’t have any pictures or own any but they seemed very **** well made and were beautiful.

Hi Doc Dan,

I have more than a few Spydercos from them, including half a dozen Dragonflies, a dozen yin yang crickets and so on.

They make great gifts as well, though recipients may be disinclined to use such finely crafted tools. I suggest including a thin leather slip for pocket or purse carry to help assuage any potential reticence to carry.

You have a broad variety of materials from which to choose. Pick a combo and design your wife would favor; be aware of the material properties of your selection of course. Whether mineral, gemstone, wood fossil, etc., SFSW crafts with excellent execution.

Good luck,
Nick

As other say, they do a good job over a long time. My experience with their work comes from a Kiwi model, I'm fully satisfied.

Hello Doc Dan,

I owe you some pics per your request.

The early morning June gloom of SoCal does not bring out the best color and brilliance of these SFSW examples. The Deacon has better photos on his site of a wider array than the few below.

I've arranged these chronologically, as seen with steel types. Santa Fe Stone Works has always maintained a superlative level of craftsmanship, nay, artistry.

CoPilot C09S, GIN-1, 1995:
(y'all know the G-2 "good stuff" history)

Dragonfly with a couple of Yin Yang Crickets:

Dragonfly, C28S ATS-55:
(Spydie hx recap: ATS 55 used only by Spyderco, first seen on Wayne Goddard C16. Dfly Boye dent intro 2004, bug-on-blade intro 2006, last Dfly ATS55 run 2007)

With materials such as these, a single photo doesn't show the varying color, brilliance, chatoyance etc seen in the hand. Sorry I don't have time to make a small gif to illustrate that for you. (and needs sun!)

Yin Yang Crickets, VG10, late 2000s:
(The first C29YY had smaller diameter circles, IIRC. At some point I seem to recall taking a picture illustrating that, but the cerebral crypts grow murky.)

Kiwi, C75 VG10, mid 2000s, appreciate while listening to Holst (or opening a pkg with recording of same):
This motif was crafted for a variety of Spyderco models; maybe a group pic some day..

Whichever materials suit your fancy, don't forget appropriate care and maintenance. For example, some minerals benefit from periodic application of mineral oil to avoid cracking, checking, shrinkage etc.

good luck,
Nick

Over 10 years ago, my wife gave me the Santa Fe Stoneworks Delica as a Christmas gift. As I understand it, the onlay is jet and blood jasper. I've carried it occasionally, and so far it's held up well. There's one minor chip on one of the sections of jasper, that was totally my fault though.

Once the sun goes down a bit, I'll try and get a better shot.

Does SF Stoneworks do custom jobs? Meaning, could I request/purchase a specific model in a specific pattern? Or do they just do a bunch and sell them?

I have few, the quality is top notch! I was in the same spot, I don't like to wear jewelry but a fancy SFSW spydie does work for me. And I'm pretty sure they do custom orders.

I even visited their shop back in 2011 I think:

Wow! Those are some gorgeous knives you guys have. I have gotten some emails from them, but they raise more questions. I think I will have to stay up late and give them a call.

Oh my gosh. Those are gorgeous! I would probably be afraid to carry one though unless I had a duplicate tucked away in my desk...
The inlay is only on the one side, right?

You can get both sides done if you want.
