I love this knife! Been playing with it and that's basically all lol! Cut up some cardboard and opened some envelopes, then shredded them! Still need to run it on the sharpmaker and get it screaming sharp, but for a knife that was bought a year or two ago and never used it was still shaving!

Spyderco, you constantly amaze me!

I'm pretty sure all spydercos are 30° (give or take a degree or two due to small variances).

I think I read or heard Sal say they aim for 30 degrees. Which is why the sharpmaker has the 30 degree slots.

I haven't had to thin my golden spydies yet. I do need to work on my persistence though. I tried to hit it on the 40 degree slots and touch her up, but one stone was only hitting the shoulder! Time to reprofile!!

I pretty much reprofile all my knives to 30 degrees or close to it. Seems to work well for me, and makes using my sharpmaker a breeze. I really need to upgrade from my lansky though. It's a good system and does its job, just a hassle with the clamp and everything.

I really just need to get good at freehand haha!

Why does the sharpmaker have a 40° slot labeled "edge" and a 30° one labeled back bevel?

I don´t know exactly what "back bevel" means, but as far as I know one of the ideas with the 30 degree slots is: If you sharpen your knife very often on the 40 degree setting (or in fact on any setting of course) it will become thicker and thicker behind the edge over time obviously. Using the 30 degree setting from time to time, you can take away a bit of that "shoulders" (not sure that´s the correct term) and thin the knife out behind the edge once more (can´t explain this better in English..)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Does that mean the edge is 40°?

The main edge bevel is 30 degrees. The microbevel is 40 degrees. It creates a stronger edge that will last longer, but still cut much like a 30 degree edge. Also quicker to touch up. After touching up 10 or so times it will get wider behind the edge, so you use the 30 degree slots to thin it out again, and use the 40 degrees to again maintain the microbevel.

Sal explains all this in the sharpmaker DVD. You can also find the videos on YouTube.

Seems like you just did? So edge means microbevel. Makes sense.

This is what happens after you sharpen/microbevel at 40° several times:

So you need to do this:

Thanks. I know. I like having the diagram pic. Honestly, thanks.

I do still think the factory edge is closer to 40° inclusive, so 20° per side?? Mind you, I did no research.
