New stones for Edge Pro (for Maxamet)

#1

Post by 5pins »

I need to buy some new stones for my Edge Pro and was wondering if the standard ones are good enough for the Maxamet PM2 I have coming, or should I get diamond, CBN, or what?

Moldmaster (SiC) stones from Congress Tool are a good choice. I like and use Venev bonded diamonds too.

I have found that you can touch up or even repair minor edge issues with Spyderco's medium ceramic hone, so aluminum oxide will work...though diamond will make the process a whole bunch easier imho, especially if it's more than a mere touch-up. I have no personal experience with CBN.

I've used a 1200 / 2000 combo Venev bonded diamond hone (1x6" version) to maintain a Maxamet Para 3's edge and it worked fine as well. I've not (yet) used any plated diamond on my Maxamet knives.

Congress Moldmasters (SiC) would be another good option if you wanted to look for an inexpensive alternative.

With the Congress stones, Is there a place to buy them for the Edge Pro or would you need to get them from Congress and glue them on the Edge Pro backer?

Never mind I just figured it out. They look interesting.

3M Super 77 and the Edge Pro backers will take care of the mounting.

Check out Gritomatic. They have a good selection of stones.

I recommend diamonds for Maxamet.

Not saying SiC wouldn't work, but diamonds are better.

Maxamet has a carbide and composition level that demands Diamond and/or CBN abrasives for optimal performance

I was going to post that I used my Moldmasters when I reprofiled my Maxamet Native 5. Then I looked back at some pics on my phone and it appears that I actually used my Venev bonded diamonds for at least the initial reprofile. I've honestly been surprised by how well Moldmasters cut even on high carbide steels. I guess if I was going to get one set of stones specifically for Maxamet it would be diamonds. If I wanted a set of stones that I could use for Maxamet and everything else I'd go with Moldmasters.

I think it depends more on the finish you desire.

If you want a coarse finish to say 600grit, SiC is all you’ll need. :)

Absolutely get the Moldmasters. Best stones for the money I've used.

Moldmasters are excellent and cheap, but I definitely prefer the Gritomatic/Venev bonded diamond stones for difficult to grind steels (and basic steels for that matter!). That said, Maxamet is surprisingly easy to work with.

I have decided to go with the Venev bonded diamond stones from 240 to 2000 grit and the 8 grit diamond stropping compound sampler pack. That should get me started.
