Ew, no way.

The axis lock is far inferior to the compression lock in longevity and intuitive operation. Those omega springs are made of a very thin gauge wire and WIll eventually break.

That’s my opinion on that
I second this. I have one axis lock knife, and the Omega springs have broken 3 times so far. The CBBL is superior, but honestly, the compression lock is perhaps the finest pocket knife lock in existence currently.
It's easier to open and close than an Axis/CBBL, is less suceptible to blade play, and makes disassembly a breeze. Fully disassembling an Axis knife is a royal pain in the you-know-what.

I actually prefer the axxis lock over the comp.lock in operation (And the CBBL in every aspect over both)

But I'm with you on longetivity: My Minigrip does not see much use (non at all lately), but the springs already broke twice. To be fair to BM: Replacements were sent to Europe for free, and installing those quite easy.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Deja vu... Seen you doing this on blade forums as well.

Give me a compression lock or the cbbl any day over the axis. I haven't seen any complaints about them (aside from a little lock stick in compression locks, nbd really), yet I see axis locks with broken springs all the time. That renders the knife useless until you replace the springs. Ill take reliable locks over unreliable any day.

Now that would be a CQI upgrade for sure! Maybe someday. As was said, the Shaman will certainly do for now.

Naah ... Manix is perfect as is. Now, a compression lock Native Chief would be something else !

The Superleaf is pretty darn close to a comp lock manix2 as well.

Amen to that. Wish the Superleaf was available in a sprint run with S90V, S35VN, or LC200N. That would be perfect. In the meantime the Manix is the knife the original poster is describing. The CBBL is just better than the Axis lock and the Manix is available in FRCP with several steel choices. There are also aftermarket scales available if you prefer another material.

I don't call it the Axis because I don't wanna just talk crap about benchmade/griptillian etc, and more importantly I'm pretty sure they can't call it an axis lock in their advertised specs. So I gave it a generic name. Pin and springs lock sounds about as generic as it gets

I'm not a big fan of the compression lock next to the pin and springs. Although I would prefer it over most other common lock types. Easy one handed use is important to me

The ganzo knives are proof of why they should do this

There is no shame in it, they built themselves on the backs of great American ideas.

There is obviously a market for this. And again while a compression lock is ok. It ain't no axis lock.

I don't think many people are buying PM2's because they love the lock, they love the ergos, trust the steel, and trust the tolerances/warranty. And the look grows on you too. Not to mention a narrow point is difficult to go without once you've had it.

If there was one obvious negative to the PM2 it is it's lock. It would crush the 941 in sales if it had something like an axis lock
You're assuming things that haven't held true for Spyderco. I'm neutral on the compression lock, but most Spyderco customers love it. Look at the sales of the Para 3, all the Para 3 sprints last year, and the Para 3 LW this year. Look at how popular the Shaman is. Look at how popular the Lil' Native is. Sal has said on this forum that the upcoming Sage 5 LW was developed and put into production because of how popular the compression lock is. Meanwhile, the Sage 3 with the Blackie Collins Bolt Action Lock, despite how similar it is in operation to the Axis and CBBL locks, was one of the first of the Sage series to be discontinued.

The PM2 already is crushing the 941 in sales because the 941 is discontinued. If you're talking about the very similar 940 series, they're a different animal than the PM2. The 940 series is popular because it's narrow top to bottom and thin in the pocket for its blade length. Spyderco's Kapara, Ikuchi, and upcoming Native Chief are more similar in concept.

not quite. there are so many subtle differences that it’s not even close. the shaman doesn’t fill my grip like the manix does toward my pinky and ring fingers. it has a thicker blade stock and grind, which is less desirable in an edc for me. the edge angle is way different and i much prefer that of the manix. the only thing i like better on the shaman is the stonewashing. i enjoy the comp lock and would like it on a manix, but the cbbl is fine by me. and i can’t bring up the shaman without mentioning that it’s way too expensive for what it is. the pricing is inconsistent in the lineup and it’s outrageous for the shaman. so, i could spend a lot more money to get a shaman and the only thing i would like better is a stonewashed blade. everything else about it is worse or no better than the manix for me. no thanks.

that does look closer than the shaman, but still not quite there for me. i hate those hooks at the end of the handle. they look stupid sticking awkwardly out of the pocket. they are mostly in my way when the knife is closed and add very little benefit when the knife is in hand, so prefer to not have them. honestly, the end of the manix handle is so perfect that nothing else in its size class can kick it out of my pocket.

i have the same issue with the caribbean. on paper, it should be my perfect knife, but it suffers from the same awkward hook at the end of the handle. couple that with looks i don’t care for, and it’s been a no-go for me so far. i may pick one up someday, but i’m hoping there’s a caribbean 2 with some cqi upgrades first.

anyway, i understand wanting your favorite spyderco knife with a different spyderco lock. sorry for derailing.

I am not a big fan of the Comp Lock, though I do not hate it. I much prefer a back lock or a CBBL. The Axis lock has a weakness in the springs and also they can open on rebound if dropped. I have almost been stabbed a couple of times by two different knives like this. Once I dropped my knife and another time someone else did and the knives opened and almost hit my foot with the open blade. I have never been able to reduplicate this with a CBBL, though I can get Axis locks to do this from time to time.

If Spyderco made the PM2 and Military with a CBBL I would buy a lot of them over time. It is a great lock. The only issue is, that due to the way the tension is needed to hold the lock open or closed, there is a lot more pressure needed to operate it than an Axis lock. There are always tradeoffs.
