HRC Database

#1

Post by ZrowsN1s »

We already have the great Behind the Edge Database (which can be found here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=73097)

I propose we start a HRC database and list all of the known Hardness testing results we can. So if you have any HRC results for any of the Spyderco models please share them here and I'll try to keep a List on this page :spyder:
.
.
.
.
:spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:
Keep in mind these are approximate numbers not exact numbers. Corrections and additions are always welcome :D

"Edit*
I feel like I should expand on this point a little and remind anyone reading this list of a few things.

1st- these numbers are usually from a single source, who ran a single test, on a single knife.... needless to say, the results are NOT scientific. And as such they are not necessarily accurate. This is why corrections and additional information is always welcome. The more data points, the more accurate the information. PLEASE take these numbers with a grain of salt.

2nd- There is way more to a good knife than an HRC number.
You can have two knives with the same steel and same HRC number, and different heat treat protocols, and those knives will perform differently from eachother.
It bears repeating, the HRC number is ONE factor out of MANY, you can not judge a knife on it's HRC alone. A high or a low HRC does not tell the whole story, it's just a piece of the puzzle.

A HUGE THANK YOU!!!
To Kurt aka JcoolG19 for the majority of the numbers on this list. As well as Jim Ankerson, Luvthemknives, Bladebanter, Supersteelsteve, Banter247, Outpost76, Larrin, TripleBHandmade, Alchemy1, Frankie Blades, Kenny (InThePocket), Roman (KKnives Switzerland), JackFarmBoy, BlueCollarSurvival, and everyone else who is on the front lines of testing and EDUCATING the knife community. Without you guys lists like this would not be possible, and no one in the knife community would understand the list anyways even if they had it. I don't think I'm alone in feeling like the knowledge and awareness level of the community has been raised lately, and you guys have really helped drive this. You freely give to the community knowledge that has cost you time, money, blood, sweat, and tears. Your work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

(If you know anyone who deserves to be in this list, leave their names in the thread and I will add them. Thank you again to everyone who has contributed.) :spyder:

Here are a bunch you can add (from https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/ran ... pe.793481/)

  • MAXAMET - Spyderco MT-24 - 67-68 RC
  • CPM S110V - Manix 2 - 62 RC
  • CPM S110V - Mule - 60 RC
  • CPM 10V - Spyderco/Farid K2 - 63 RC
  • K390 - Mule - 62-64 RC
  • CPM Rex M4 - Spyderco Gayle Bradley 1 - 62.5 RC
  • CPM S90V - Military - 60 RC
  • ZDP -189 - Endura 4 - 65 RC
  • M390 - Military - 61 RC
  • CPM S30V - Military - 60 RC
  • CTS-XHP - Military - 60.5 RC
  • ELMAX - Mule - 58.5 RC
Further:
  • Sal's Military CMP CruWear tested at 61.1.
  • In Michael Christy's CPM Rex 45 video, someone commented that they rockwell tested their Para 2 rex 45 at 66.5 hrc, so you need a range.
This would be a great database. But you probably might want to add references where the data come from.

Rex45 has been tested on several knives, and the numbers are between 64 and 66.5 hrc. I believe there was at least one Para 3 that was 64 hrc, while Ankerson's data shows the Military at 66.5.

This is awesome

I'm wanting to merge in cut tests with it...

Maybe I'll just fill in HRC data to the cut test list below

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... G4tug/edit
S30V, VG10, M4, XHP, BD1, Cruwear, Elmax, Maxamet, 204P, H1, K390, A11, Rex45, LC200N, M390, 20CV, BD1N, S45VN waiting to afford MagnaCut

Thanks for the all the Info guys! I'll update the list when I have a minute :D

I thought about adding the sources of the info, but decided it would make the list kind of hard to read. Id like to keep it easy to read and if I can ranked from hardest to softest. People can see (most) of the sources of the info here in the comments. Im sure I'll get some wrong, but people can always add corrections.

As for cut test info... those results are interesting but are a combo of geometry steel heat treat and hrc etc... I'll probably just stick to HRC.

Just saw a post by Frankie_Blades over on Instagram. He did some HRC testing on some Spydies. If you're on IG and haven't seen his page, you should check him out, he tests more than just spyderco's and is the owner of tactical_pterodactyl_knives .

Frankie_Blades numbers:
S30V Paramilitary 2 @ 59 HRC
S35VN Para 3 @ 59 HRC
XHP Para 3 @ 61.5 HRC

Just out of curiosity, why would the s110v military be 63-64 HRC, but the s110v paramilitary is 60.9 HRC. I ask because I have multiple s110v paramilitaries, and assumed (hoped) they would be more than 60.9. Especially since they are already doing it in the military's... and even the manix was higher.

All the knives were heat treated in different batches. Probably months apart. Different runs different hardnesses. This could be intentional or unintentional as well. Perhaps people complained about the one run being too hard so they lowered it a little. No way to tell. Also 60.9 HRC represents probably a single data point from a single knife. You could rockwell test yours amd find it is higher. This guide is a ROUGH estimate and not an exact number. The more data points we get, the more accurate it will be.
