Knife collecting being a relatively recent hobby of mine, I only found out about the Mule Team project a couple of weeks ago.
Around that time I had to cut a branch off a walnut tree in my garden. Just yesterday I retrieved that branch that I'd left laying on the grass, cut a piece off, placed it inside a shed, with the intention of buying a blade for which I could attempt to make a handle one day, having very little idea how to go about that, thinking youtube would get me started. I was very much looking forward to it. Today I find out ... no more mules. Disappointed !

There are a few still available on Spyderco's website. PD1 steel would be the one to get.
Absolutely this!

I'd go read up about CRU-WEAR and then go rush to buy the PD#1 Mule Team just as fast as you can (which is what I did, lol). Micro-Melt PD#1 is basically CarTech's (Carpenter) version of Crucible's CRU-WEAR. Really, really fantastic stuff!

Yep! My suggestion talked me into the buying one! Haha. Ordered it a few hours ago. Already ordered the scale material as well. No more fixed mules though. Bring on the folders!

I'm very interested in hearing what you end up thinking about the Mule Team, and even more so the UKPK. I was pretty positive that I was going to check out BD1N and then get rid of my FRN UKPK... But that's not going to happen. This thing is great and is staying with me. I can only imagine the G10 version will be that much better. :)

I sent my Mule Team #27 out to have something special done to commemorate the last of the fixed blade Mule Teams. Going for something like this.

I really hope your folding Mule Team idea gains traction and become a reality in some fashion. I'd hate to see this program disappear for good.

Thank you for that Steelcity. I had searched UK dealer websites and found none. Having read more, I think they never were distributed via dealers. I also had it in my head that Spyderco doesn't ship internationally, but that was incorrect, they do. I have ordered two, to make shipping cost more effective. Now I have to convince the dog to carry home a piece of oak on this evenings walk. :)

Mules were only ever sold new via the SFO.

So how about Spyderco - via distributors - releases a Ti Military that can be assembled in the field (just needs different screws). And then afterwards, Spyderco follows up with Military Mule blades (only), sold as Mules were sold previously ? So you enter the program by buying the knife, and then, every so often, change the blade ?
A possible disadvantage I can see here: When you have only one handle, but several blades for that handle (or at least less handles than blades), you could never compare different Mules against each other directly at the same time.

I am, compared to most of you, not a steel-expert or "steelhead", but one way I'd like to compare different steels would probably be to just carry two Mules, and if there is spontanously something to cut, just do let's say 10 cuts with Mule 1, the nexr 10 cuts with Mule 2, and compare for example remaining sharpness at the end of the day or week... and I would not want to carry one handle, but two blades...

Mules don't need no stinkin' handles.
Can you find it and can it cut?

I have carried my Rex 121 fixed blade (Creeley Mako) quite a lot, and honestly I don't think the steel does anything that Maxamet doesn't already have covered (the Mako is a really nice EDC FB platform, though).

I'd rather see something in Rex 66 or T15 than Rex 121.

So why does the B70P cost another 10 more than the others? Isn't it one of those mid range well balanced steels?? Thanks,

I figure the Niobium content might have something to do with it.

So what quality does Niobium bring to a knife blade? Is there something about it that you would notice vs other well balanced steels?

There is a Knife Steel Nerds article about it. I'm a fan of the B70P mule:

Larrin also just posted this regarding "NioMax" in the toughest stainless thread:

Is NioMax your "new steel" that you mentioned as being in the design phase a few months ago? Can you tell us more about it? Thanks.
Can’t say that much about it. It’s designed to have similar carbide volume to AEB-L but niobium carbide instead.
