Who would have bought the Caribbean if they came in solid color scales?

I'm more deterred by the tip up only carry (for a knife this size) and the comp lock.

I am digging the LC in my Chef and Native Salt, so have seriously considered the Caribbean.

i love the idea of it, but i'm not sold on the lines (of either version) or the yellow/scale design.

i know it works ergonomically, which is really most important, but let's be honest, we all enjoy a design that has a nice look. even the manix 2, which has a lot going on in the scale design, has more continuity in the lines. i don't know... maybe that's just me.

as far as the scales, i'm not super keen on the yellow. i'd like it better in black for sure. however, i also don't care for the large landing pad for the clip. it's just not very good looking. honestly, it might still bother me even if it were all black. i wish they had chosen a solid circle landing pad in the middle with concentric circles moving outward. this would also be more consistent with their other models. btw, i've always wondered why spyderco says "bi-directional texturing" when it's clearly omni-directional texturing if you look at it.

anyway, i want to love the caribbean, but i don't and every bit of it is based on looks. vanity is lame, but it's a thing. i'd still like to get one in my hands, which could quickly change my mind, but i'm not so sure it would. and finally, i'm sure it doesn't help the case for the caribbean that i'm really happy with my edc knives and already have the pacific and native salts.

I have no problem with the scales since the Caribbean is all about function in the environment it's intended for. It's just too big for me. I prefer fixed blades at that length.

A Lil Caribbean would be a no-brainer autobuy for me.

I would have bought it in hot pink scales. I can always dye them. As for aftermarket scales, the insides have a lot more going on than your average scale. It's doable but it'll take more work than other knives. I guess you could just make the inside of the scales flat and not have them fill in the holes in the liners but I really like that detail so I'd just assume dye them if they can't be made like the factory.

I haven't purchased one yet but if they change the scales I will hurry up and buy a black/yellow one while I can. I love the killer bee look. Reminds me of the old Yamaha racing colors. I painted my truck black and yellow once. :)

I don't like the bumblebee look but I might get one and dye the scales.

Only on Thursdays!

Some of mine are crazy, but most are more subtle. Tropically embossed, silk only(sometimes linen). They fit and look nice.
Most shirts don't fit my shoulders without being to large everywhere else, which looks sloppy. I'm a man, not a slob. :P

Back to the Caribbean's scales

They looked fantastic at the beach last week!
Still woefully neglected, without the slightest evidence of it.

I'm carrying my "Hawaiian shirt" Caribbean" today. Plain Sheep-foot. Also wearing a subtle "Hawaiian shirt", made in Kauai. Also, I'm in Kauai.

I have one in the bubble bee scales. It's not my favorite but I don't mind. If they did another scale I'd like to see a top to bottom contour as opposed to the milled ridges. If they're going to spend time milling, may as well be to make it more hand fitting (like the d'allara).

Why not both?

The ridges prevent axial slippage. 3-D contouring adds comfort and helps grip. It also adds expense, but I love it. Given a choice between flat G-10 scales and contoured FRN (like on the Aqua Salt) I’ll take the contoured every time.

I'm all for contouring, but the grooves have to stay. The only way I'd like to see a smooth contoured handle is if it was a Ti compression frame lock ;)
