Sharpmaker for beginner or hold out for Gauntlet?
Sharpmaker for beginner or hold out for Gauntlet?
Currently I'm using two bellied out stones to sharpen kitchen knives and a couple folders (rather poorly I might add). Should I hold out for a Gauntlet or get the cheaper and currently available Sharpmaker? As best I can tell the advantage of the Gauntlet is the rods for easily re-profiling an edge. I'm fine with regularly touching up so they would only come into play on a couple kitchen knives that have gone too far.
Wire clip me. Wire clip now. Me a wire clip needing a lot now.

Sharpmaker bc it has more "grit" options

Sharpmaker more angle option, and you can sharpen more things with it like shears and fishhooks.

Vote for sharpmaker here. More grit and angle options.

Even though I own a sharpmaker I will probably get a Gauntlet and add it to my sharpening tools. I am hopeful it will work with Serrations really well.

Sharpmaker
Smaller package, more options, i guess better for serrations

With the Sharpmaker rods, you can always turn it into a guided angle sharpener.

I'm trying to hold out judgement on the Gauntlet until I get the full story but it seems like a more entry level kit with less options so I'd go for the Sharpmaker.

No, I saw it on Reddit some time back and thought it was cool. I thought I saw somebody who 3D printed a new base with steeper angles than the usual 20 and 30 degrees. We just got a 3D printer at work. I suppose I could try to print after hours.ShaneInDenver wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 4:07 pmHave you printed this and tried it?p_atrick wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 1:06 pmWith the Sharpmaker rods, you can always turn it into a guided angle sharpener.

zhyla was playing around with 3d printed block that holds the Spyderco rods and is playing around with adjustable angles. If you do print that design and play with it I'd love to know the results.

Re: Sharpmaker for beginner or hold out for Gauntlet?
I tested the Gauntlet at SHOT 2 years ago.
I've never had much luck with the Sharpmaker, but the eliptical stones of the Gauntlet were a completely different experience - much, much easier to use.
It put a beautiful, hair popping edge on my D2 millie with just a simple 3-3,2-2,1-1 left right. I found it much easier to keep the edge, and especially the tip, in contact with the eliptical stones then on the flats of the Sharpmaker.
I would hold out for the Gauntlet.

I’d love to try the gauntlet but I prefer 30 degree included edge bevel. I’ve been impressed with the doublestuff 2 with cbn/fine ceramic.
OP, if you’re used to sharpening on bench stones you might be happy with a couple Spyderco bench stones.

I wish someone made adapters so I could hook my SM rods into my Edge Pro to sharpen serrations. I'd rather not have to disassemble the standard stone holder setup that the EP used though. If any of you 3D printer folks wanna make something like this that actually works I'd buy it.p_atrick wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 1:06 pmWith the Sharpmaker rods, you can always turn it into a guided angle sharpener.

I actually saw that on Thingiverse last night. I saved the files for reference. I plan to make an extra rod for my Hapstone V7 so I can use the flats of SM stones with it. I'll use his basic design for the stone holders and adapt for the smaller (M6?) rod that the Hapstone uses.p_atrick wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 1:06 pmWith the Sharpmaker rods, you can always turn it into a guided angle sharpener.

It's weird that you're asking for this. Last night, after thinking about making an extra rod for my Hapstone, I figured I'd probably figure out how to adapt for all the Edge Pro users. I don't think I'll have a problem designing what you need and printing it. I'll probably need some dimensions etc, I may have to send you some prototypes to try. We can discuss offline. Keep in mind that I just got a 3D printer a few weeks ago and already have several projects I'm working on. Plus I'm planning on getting a larger format printer in the near future.Evil D wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 8:30 amI wish someone made adapters so I could hook my SM rods into my Edge Pro to sharpen serrations. Sounds good, shoot me a PM whenever you're ready to start and we'll sort it out.
