Forum & SPAM Protection Update - 27Feb

#1

Post by TazKristi »

Hey, everyone:
We will be taking the forum down (for a much shorter time period) to do a quick update on the software and an update on the SPAM protection software. The forum will go offline around 9:00 am (MST) on Wednesday, 27Feb. This time around it shouldn't be more than a few hours (knock on wood).

The forum software update is not significant but it is necessary. Perhaps even more important is the update for the SPAM protection software. The tools we use are often unseen by most of you. It is designed to stop spammers from even registering an account. To give you an idea of its effectiveness and just how big of an issue this can be - in a recent 7 day period our software blocked over 3,800 spam accounts from registering. Could you imagine what the forum would be like if those made it through? :( This software is just one tool of many that we use to keep the forum clean and safe but it's a really important tool.

Thanks much for your patience and most of all for your continued support! You are all appreciated!

Kristi

Thank you Kristi for the heads up, and also thanks for your work in keeping this place running smoothly. 3,800 spammers in 7 days is ridiculous. :(

Kristi,

Thank you for notification and good luck!

I noticed that somehow my browser doesn’t show the ‘padlock’ symbol that denotes the connection is HTTPS. Trying to add https:// doesn’t seem to work.

Edit to add, now it’s HTTPS! Thanks Kristi! 👍🏻

Server migrations seldom go off without a hitch (or major issues sometimes) but updates usually go smoothly these days.

Thanks for the heads up. About ten years ago I was one of five mods on a popular gun forum before we installed anti-spam software. We spent the majority of our work fighting SPAM. I suspect it has just gotten worse.

Ughhhhh... another day of having to make myself busy at work and checking for the forum availability every half hour :p

Have a good day my fellow knife friends!
