The Spyderco Delica is such a classic and unique in its own way... it's something you don't replace. I don't believe the Delica will go away no matter what new knives or new concepts of old designs Spyderco comes out with.

No, why would it? The original Para 3 didn't.

The Delica has a thinner blade.

It is available in many more steels.

Some folks don't like uaing an index choil to get a full grip.

Some people like carrying tip down.

Some prefer a lockback to a compression lock.

Some like regular clips better than wire clips.

They're quite different designs.

The comment above re ‘if you actually used it to cut something you would know the blade is 70% thicker’ says sooooo much.

I think it may be the forerunner of the Delica 5!!! ... which would basically be the same Delica, but, USA made with BD1N blade and wire clip.

The thicker blade is the main distinction. But I think between the Para3LW and the FRN Chapparal, we now have specialists to either side of the Delica, one for harder work, one for slicing. But I suspect for many, particularly who desire USA-made and enjoy sprints, the P3LW will be a really compelling choice. Haven't handled one yet, though.

That said, a USA-made Delica 5 with the choil and thinner blade and wire clip would be... deeply welcome. That knife as a sprint host? Oh yes.

Some people don't like choils.

A ParaMilitary 2 in FRN would be a stronger contender vs. the Delica as you don't have to use the choil on it. I'd consider the ParaMilitary 3 in FRN to be a strong contender to the Native. Both have choils & are around the same price. From there it comes down to lock preference, steel choice, and flat blade top vs. hump.

If this was a few months ago before I bought both my PM3 and my Native 5 LW. I think would have chosen this new Para 3 LW.

One thing I'm not a fan about with my Native 5 LW is the opening action. I really believe the knife would be better if they had included phosphor bronze washers. So I'm curious if the PM3 LW action will be on washers or not?

Now for the question of questions: Will this replace the Delica for those who purchase and use the Spyderco Delica models, or, not?

For me, the Delica has already been replaced by the UK Pen Knife.

The ergonomics of the Delica just do not work for my hands due to the finger grooves and the pocket clip placement, while the Uk Pen Knife is perfectly fine. The lack of a lock on the UKPK isn't an issue for me due to my usage of that size/thickness of knife.

I think this new Para 3 will probably compete against the Native 5 LW and Manix 2 LW more than the various Delica models. But I also think it's going to attract people who want a compression lock knife under $100 as either a user or just to try out the lock. I hope it significantly adds to sales overall and that cannibalization of sales from other Spyderco models is minimal.

One feature that that separates the Delica from the Native 5, Chapparal, and now the Pm3. Is the Emmerson Wave you can get on some models. It might not be a feature that's for everyone but it does interest me. And I can't help but think it's a feature that would just simply look weird on any of the other knives.

While I fully respect your wish for above mentioned new features in a Delica 5: I personally hope they will keep it a knife that has great ergos in a regular, not choked up grip - so please no choil, which also results in having your hand placed closer to the edge when the knife is held with all fingers on the handle. There are already (too?) many options in Spydercos line up if one wants a fingerchoil (and I have to say: Imho it's no problem to choke up on that Delica-Ricasso)
I also have to politely disagree concerning the clip: In the Delica/ Endura line I'd still prefer the standard one..

It won't replace the Delica. There have been other Spyderco knives in the Delica's size range that haven't replaced it.

As far as the choil, IMO the one on the Para3 isn't bad at all. I found that I don't care for the choil on the Native 5. But neither will 'replace' the Delica.

Now I am on the edge of my seat awaiting a Military with FRN grips. Do you think we will see this within our life time?

in my book the Military already qualifies as an LW series knife... the partial liners give enough strength to support the long blade, but take away the rigidity of G10 or CF scales and I'd think that maintaining that rigidity might require larger liners, possibly making an FRN version no lighter.
