Spydiewiki down?

#1

Post by Peter1960 »

Over the years spydiewiki.com was best encyclopedia for a fan of Spyderco. A lot of good work was needed to make it to it's unmatched status. So much the worse my feeling to see it down today  (I have no glue why it's down)

I hope this is only a temporary status and soon I and other people were allowed to continue our meticulous work for the community.

As i understand it, it is a member here who's "in charge" This is sad since i use Spydiewiki as a reference on a (at least) weekly basis :(

What! Spydiewiki is an invaluable resource! It should have fail-safe, nuclear disaster proof, national treasure level protections in place. Glad you're on it jabba. :)

I'm just a long time contributor, so can't personally get it fixed, but I'm trying to get in touch with somebody who can. ;) Candyman shared the issue on a group that has some of the founding members, so hopefully this problem will get resolved.

I don’t know who runs this or what it costs but if you need some funds I’ll happily help out to keep the site running. Anyone here responsible for the page?

I don't know for sure why it's down, but a couple of us have reached out to see what's going on. I have an idea of what might be the cause, but won't speculate here until I hear more.

I seem to recall the subject being brought up before, but i still think Spyderco should take over, or host it.. It is an IMO unvaluable source for info, beyond what can be found today on the official site.

Agree.

At least host / own it so it never goes down.

My first port of call for info.

IMHO Spyderco should sponsor this website in some way ... it is the main source of information for most spydermaniacs ... I have learned a lot of my favorite models thanks to it...

Horray! I'm glad you're at least considering this Sal. The treasure-trove of information compiled on Spydiewiki is valuable and would be a loss to all Spyderco fans if it ever went away.

Sal - I can see it being minimal work/effort from Spyderco's side if you host it and perhaps vet/moderate future additions to it. That said i appreciate and understand you have other more important things on your plate in Golden :)

I have at least 100 hours into the Spydiewiki, though wouldn't be surprised if it were closer to a couple hundred (it takes a while to research old models when the page doesn't exist yet). The Q page alone was a massive undertaking (researching variants, tracking down pictures of as many as I could, etc.) that I sunk countless hours into. It would be sad if all that vanished, not only because of the time I invested, but because it was the single best resource for old models and certainly the best resource by far for the Q.

I'm pretty certain this downtime, however, is only temporary, and the wiki will be back in some form or another.

It was a shock to go there and see the "Account Suspended" message. I go there quite frequently and really appreciate the effort put in by seemingly anonymous contributors. If money is involved, I'm sure a lot of people would be glad to make small contributions. And thanks to all who have worked on it over the years!
