Spyderco Native 5 Salt SE or Pacific Salt SE ?

#1

Post by Extra330SC »

Need some help picking between these two gems for my son...the avid recreational fisherman!

He has a 21 foot center console fishing boat that he bought new with his buddy in 2016. He uses the boat 4-6 times a month fishing off the California coast from Imperial beach to Catalina ! I gifted a Carribbean Leaf PE middle of last year along with numerous utility and fillet blades...most of which have rusted .

I intended to buy the Native 5 Salt for the boat "work" knife that would stay in the tackle box and last without much maintenance. ...was a slam dunk IMHO. I made the mistake of reading up on the Pacific Salt SE last night
and realized that the longer blade would probably be a better all around knife for him! Now I'm conflicted. ..

Would like some opinions on which Spyderco would be a better fit for an all around fishing utility blade . Thanks in advance.

James

My son realized how nice the Caribbean was and uses it as an EDC along with the PM2 and Tenacious I bought him. Smart kid!

Unless he will just cut line with it, I suggest longer is better for cutting bait, cleaning fish etc.

personally, i think the native is probably a better work knife because it’s beefier and feels more solid. however, around the water, i’d rather have the pacific salt for extra length. i don’t know if any folding knife will ever replace my pacific salt. it’s the perfect combination of blade length, weight, and comfort of carry.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Thanks for info guys. ..the longer blade on the PS definitely makes sense!

Appreciate the heads up Rick...if he doesn't chime in I'll try a PM for his opinion!

The H1 in the Pacific Salt is better suited for the all time seawater exposure. The lc200n on the Native is still a martensitic steel and therefore still endangered to rust, tho he is more rustproof then many other steels. So plus 1 for the Pacific Salt.

The Pacific Salt is, I think, the best folder available anywhere for the purpose you want it for. I'd call it a slam dunk. You could get the yellow handle for visibility, or the all black, which I love.
If you are also considering a fixed blade, check out the Jumpmaster 2. I'd want one with me on a fishing boat, for sure.

Pacific Salt, hands down. He’ll want that longer blade, especially in SE.

Thanks again for the responses! Got the yellow Pacific Salt coming from Amazon. Had enough points left to add a BK9 / Micarta scales!

I know he's going to love it. Now I can throw away the rusted assisted opening combo edged knives (that barely open) in his tackle box.
