native salt!
Re: native salt!
another weird thing i’ve noticed...
after eating bbq the other night, i wiped the blade down with a napkin before putting it in my pocket, but i didn’t wash it until much later. now, if the blade has oils on it from my skin, in the right light, i can still see where the sauce was.
but if i wipe it down with a cloth, i can’t see it anymore until the blade has oils from my fingers again.
this may be a bad example because it looks like i didn’t wipe it down all the way, but you can see the light is the same and the “stain” is almost gone. if i were to dirty up the blade with my fingers again, you’d be able to see the same thing as in the first picture. clearly this isn’t any type of corrosion and it’s not affecting anything (or bothering me), but i thought it was weird and i should share it to see if anyone else has any insight or similar experience.

If FFG Pacific Salts don't hit the market in 2019, I may pick up one of these to carry IWB while trail running to see what my battery acid sweat does to LC200N.
Side note - I owned one of the original Natives in S30V. I modded the handle to give it the same shape the 5 has. I found before the mod I couldn't get a full grip behind the choil, but afterwards I could.
With the Native 4 Spyderco ended up adopting the handle shape I modded on to my Native 1. Still haven't gotten around to picking one up since I prefer bigger knives these days, but the Salt will probably end up in my collection in 2019.
Re: native salt!
I still wish this (LC200N Salt) would come to the Manix 2 Lightweight form! Give me a wire clip anytime over the stock clip of the Native!

Re: native salt!
I third this. After experiencing the wire clip on the Chef, I don’t know that I’d enjoy the other style anymore.

Re: native salt!
the clip on the native salt is really stiff, but it’s already breaking in nicely. i prefer it to the wire clips, but the manix 2 lw wire clip is great.

Re: native salt!
Does this knife inherently have side to side blade play? With the pivot screw tightened down all the way, my knife has blade play. When it's locked open you can barely detect it. Disengage the lock, with the blade still open and it's very noticeable. I guess it doesn't really matter but it bothers me. Anyone else?
I took it apart to see if there was an unevenness on the FRN at the pivot but I didn't see anything.

Re: native salt!
It uses a bushing style pivot so I'm guessing they all have the blade play. It tightens from the (righty) clip side.

I don't own a Native 5 Salt but I do own 3 N5 LWs and 4 non LW.. All of them lock up solid with no play in any direction. When unlocked there's almost no detectable side-to-side play in any of them. Only my N5 2015 Forum knife has a tiny bit of wiggle when unlocked. I would say that your N5 Salt is definitely not typical.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: native salt!
Interesting. Thanks for the reply. I should revise what I said a little bit. When locked open I can't detect any blade play. But yeah, when I disengage the lock it's very noticeable. I have a lot of lockbacks and I've never had this experience but I think this is the only one with a bushing style pivot.

Re: native salt!
I don't use my locking knives open and not locked so I don't see a reason to check blade play in that position.

Re: native salt!
I RIT dyed the handle for more discreet pocket carry. I did not disassemble because I wanted the symmetry. I also sanded under the clip to make for smoother (un)pocketing.
Re: native salt!
I think that's a reasonable point of view. :)Sjucaveman wrote: ↑Tue Jan 01, 2019 11:44 amI don't use my locking knives open and not locked so I don't see a reason to check blade play in that position.

Re: native salt!
Man that took the dye really well. What technique did you use if you don’t mind sharing? Didn’t know frcp would take it that good.
Re: native salt!
Black powder RIT dissolved in sauce pan, brought to near boil and turned off heat. Also added a little vinegar and dish soap. Suspended knife in solution for 15 minutes. Rinsed under cold water.
Re: native salt!
That rit dye is is yer blade play problem.... haha!
Joking aside, both of my native LWs have zero blade play when locked open.

I’ve never used the liquid.
