Paramilitary 2 With Wire Clip!
Paramilitary 2 With Wire Clip!
I've been preaching the word of Spyderco for some time now and recently a friend and co-worker, who is machinist, finally got himself baptized. His first foray was a Cutlery Shoppe Manix 2 LW exclusive and he was hooked. The next thing you know, he's ordering up a PM2. He's fondled several of my Spyderco offerings and knew he was smitten with wire clips so when his new baby arrived? Well, there was only one thing to do...
He milled out some slots and bored a through-hole. The clip is currently off the M2LW. Actually feels really good and fits in the pocket like it came this way from the factory.
I suppose some folks might not like the three holes being left behind but this is a function over form mod and I think it's pretty awesome.

Be still my heart!
Having a wire clip on my entire collection of PM2's has been my dream since I bought my first one. The PM2 is the only model of Spyderco I'll buy without a wire clip, everything else is off the table. These photos have given me a renewed hope of bringing that dream to fruition. I'm getting a new drill press for Christmas and I now know the first project I'm going to attempt.
In fact, I think I'll call Golden tomorrow and order a whole mess of deep carry wire pocket clips!
Can you get some more details from him? What size screw and tap did he use?

You really want a mill for slotting operations like this but for light work an XY table of some sort on your drill press will do the trick.Zatx wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:28 pmBe still my heart!

I’d be inclined to use the same torx screw they use to hold the larger wire clips on. Would look more factory. Does Spyderco well those? I assume they’re metric.
I wonder what you could fill the holes with that wouldn’t look out of place? Black epoxy?
Re: Paramilitary 2 With Wire Clip!
I did this mod to a Para 1 years ago...this is the first Para 2 I've seen with a wire clip. Looks great!
Re: Paramilitary 2 With Wire Clip!
The hole isn't tapped, it's just straight through. He used the Chicago-like screw (one piece male stud, other female barrel) from the M2LW. In the Manix, there is a tiny flat molded into the FRCP to prevent the screwing from spinning. That would get pretty complicated here so he skipped it but it is plenty snug. I don't know if it will loosen with time but right now, messing with it, it doesn't appear it's going anywhere.Zatx wrote: ↑Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:28 pmBe still my heart!

I believe he said the screw was a 2-56.
And as said, the slots were milled in.

Sweet, I love the wire clips and wish more were offered from the factory.

Thank you! I completely missed the cap on the backside! I think for my version I'll attempt to tap the liner so there isn't any protrusion past the steel liner as the original screws are attached.
Re: Paramilitary 2 With Wire Clip!
Yeah if you’re going to go to the trouble you might as well get a tap. You’re not tapping a great distance so it should be relatively idiot proof. I guess you’ll need to grind the screw down to correct length if you can’t find one appropriately short.

Very nice!
Re: Paramilitary 2 With Wire Clip!
I like wire clips a little better than hour glass,
but the hour glass clip on the PM2 feels like it belongs exactly like it is.
Whenever I try some different clip it completely changes the ergos of the PM2.
Maybe it's just that I'm so use to it afters years.

Very cool! I been wondering how to put a wire clip on some other knives....

I wonder if the tip of the blade doesn't hit the screw? It goes through the knife, if I'm not mistaken.
