New Knife Day

Post by Para3 »

Received my Stretch 2 ZDP-189 G10 today.
I'm pretty excited to use the ZDP-189.
Tell me about your experience with this steel.
Thanks for looking.

No bad experiences! Nice knife! I would have picked one up if I had the money during all of these deals. I'm sure you'll get a lot of good use out of it.

Not the toughest or most corrosion resistant stainless I've used, but it sharpens up to a very fine edge, cuts forever, and is stable under thin edge angles. Great steel for a pocket knife.

My relationship with ZDP is ambivalent. It takes a very sharp edge requiring the entire sequence of Sharpmaker ceramic rods followed with stropping on chromium oxide. I thought I had "mastered" that but tonight while cutting very heavy cardboard concrete forms, no prying or twisting, the apex suffered chip out in a short segment. I've micro-beveled at a more obtuse angle of 20° and hope this or more resharpenings to get beyond any burnt steel will lessen susceptibility to additional chipping.

Hey Para3

I can’t add too much more but like Vivi said ZDP-189 is a great pocket knife steel. It takes a crazy sharp aggressive edge and contrary to popular belief it isn’t that hard to sharpen.

Do a little search if you like and you’ll find much discussion of ZDP-189. :)

Bruce,
Sorry to hear about your chipping incident. I haven't put mine to the test yet, but am looking forward to using it.
Good luck.
