Wearing blades out
Has anyone actually worn a spyderco blade out?
I've certainly seen many an old pocket knife with a blade sharpened into an awl. But never a spyderco.
Anyone have pictures?

Re: Wearing blades out
My wharnie Delica gets used a ton, but doesn’t need touching up near as often as I’d expect. VG-10, by the way. I Steel it to straighten often enough. Anyway, it’s only missing less than a millimeter of blade from touch ups. I just compared with a new one the other day.
- best wishes, Jazz.
Re: Wearing blades out
This is probably the wrong place to pose that question. Most (all?) of us have a lot of knives and tend to rotate them a lot. You can wear a blade out, but you can’t wear a dozen blades out.
I carried one Native continuously for about 10 years. It didn’t really wear out, it just got dull. And the clip didn’t hold up well, but the Native clips back then aren’t as good as the current ones.

Re: Wearing blades out
Agreed, most people on here,(and any other knife forum for that matter) likely has either a number of knives in rotation or a couple in supersteels that take forever to wear down. Also they probably know how to sharpen well enough as to not do what my dad used to do to his “roast beef knife” on a coarse grinding wheel every Sunday. After his passing I couldn’t let it go in the trash so I turned it into my “apple knife”.zhyla wrote: ↑Sun Nov 18, 2018 9:36 pmThis is probably the wrong place to pose that question. Before he past, and after a bit of searching and some amazing generosity of a forum member, thnx Jazz, I was able to find a Native 3 for him but I told him if it ever needed sharpening, I would do it for him!
If you're wielding the sharpest tool in the shed, who's going to say that you aren't...?
Re: Wearing blades out
My Caly 3 has been sharpened enough that the tip of the blade sticks out from the end of the handle when closed. I need to adjust the kick a little.
I actually made a thread asking this same question back when I first joined.

Re: Wearing blades out
My brother's serrated Tasman Salt's serrations have begun to wear down to the point where the knife is a bit like a dull steak or butter knife (you can literally drag it around your arm aggressively while only leaving a few red marks). I keep telling him to send it in to get it sharpened, but he uses it to open boxes at work and doesn't want to be without it. I bought him a Tenacious as a backup, but he doesn't want to use it because it's a sprint run (facepalm). I have personally never worn out a Spyderco blade and I've used them quite extensively since 1994.
Re: Wearing blades out
I did see on ebay an early Endura where the serrations had no sharp points
and smooth round ends and very very shallow indents.
You could tell the knife had done a lot of work but never been sharpened.
The FRN handle looked is amazing shape.
Re Spydergs" roast beef knife, I've seen quite a few of these like that (same knives, wood handles),
solely from cutting up dead animals on the ground. And having been sharpened on a grindstone !

3 x Endura 1 SE, 1 x Endura ? CE and a Black Pacific Salt. Want Aqua Salt, Fish Hunter and a Pacific Salt Yellow.
Re: Wearing blades out
I have a few PE folders with a J shape at the ricasso, and my SE Tasman beater has rounded tips and no sign of the factory edge.
Sharpening on ceramics, I doubt I'll ever wear out my blades. It's part of the reason I avoid using diamond bench stones for touch-ups...to remove as little steel as possible to form a fresh apex.

Re: Wearing blades out
I used to do that with my cheap Swiss Army knife when I worked on a farm. For an unnamed China steel, it worked very well for me. Kind of like a cross between serrated and plain edge and cut through whatever I threw at it.

Here is this thing I saw on ebay once lol not mine just had to share
If you sharpen with stones it would take quite a while to wear one down but if you use a grinder it will not take too long

Re: Wearing blades out
The person that I bought this ZDP-189 CF Stretch stated he had carried/used/re-sharpened it over a period of many years. When I got it the tip of the blade was protruding out of the scales while in the closed position.
Did a modification to place the tip back under the scales.

Re: Wearing blades out
I've always since I got into premium quality knives back in the early 90s have had so many of them that I doubt if I could wear one out. About as close as I ever came was with a beater, pre-historic ENDURA SE model that I used for two summers in a row doing all kinds of garden, lawn and landscaping jobs in the early 2000s>> I sent the knife into Spyderco to have it sharpened. The person at Warranty & Repair at the time gave me an option of just paying some extra and they installed a completely new blade>> I think it was an AUS-8 SE blade if my memory is correct. That's as close as I ever came.
No as much rotation as I do>> I seriously doubt if I would ever wear one out unless I had a job that was extremely brutal on a blade. Especially trading for different ones all the time and getting new ones all the time when I can afford it.

Re: Wearing blades out
Looks fine to me! Pop a lower edge angle on it to compensate for many sharpenings and you should be good! That said, how is the side to side blade play?

Re: Wearing blades out
Not generallyan issue if you're using a sharpening method that conservatively removes material and don't let it get dull.
Re: Wearing blades out
It did get a wobble twice. I smacked it on the hinge with a deadblow hammer and it tightened to where I wanted it. I could see the hinge pin then so I sansed it flat on fine sandpaper and you could not see it anymore.knivesandbooks wrote: ↑Sat Nov 24, 2018 1:41 amLooks fine to me!
