Interesting Aquisition, curious if meant to be or what it use to be?

#1

Post by Locksmithpro007 »

Hello all,
I recently picked this up via EBay our if curiosity because of the names engraved on the side. I’m curious what you think this might of been or if anyone can tell me what exactly it is? All I know is that this would have come in handy at the Whippletree restaurant I worked at years ago.

...

Well, that's certainly...

Wow.

Looks like it used to be the older version of one of these, before... that... got done to it: https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... nife-6/851

Now I kind of want to know who did those serrations. Been considering getting some of my knives modded to be serrated rather than plainedged. I wouldn't go as far with it as this person has gone, but whoever it was seems to have had some skill cutting serrations into a blade. Looks like they were maybe using this one for practice?

I'd like to use a lot of expletives right now.

And in a weird way I also wanna try it out.

But I mostly just wanna run that along a Sharpmaker so I can feel how crazy bumpy it must be.

Maybe it's one of the knives Eric made and traded for a Hot Wheels decades ago...

Looks like it started out life as an 1104 (now K04) 6 1/2" Utility knife back in the late 80's or early 90's when they were still being labeled with Masahiro's name as well as Spyderco's. What happened to it after it was purchased is sad.

What a monstrosity. Probably was a nice knife at one point in time. Certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that thing though!

As we have been discussing on the SE thread.

I’m not sure. It actually cuts quite nicely. I’m still scratching my head on it though, was contemplating bringing it by the factory outlet but haven’t yet. I am a little disheartened as the original seller had it listed as a “rare Spyderco” so a return might be in order. Anyways thank you all for your input on the matter

There's Veff serrations, Spyderedges and everything in between going on there alright :D

To quote Jeff Goldblum (minus a lot of 'ums' and 'ers'): "You were so concerned with whether or not you could you never asked if you should" :)
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

What the .....

Looks like someone was practicing their serration making skills on an old spydie. I suppose you could cut rope with it? Maybe strip some wires?

It does look like. Test knife. Serrations look clean but overly deep. Lame they tried it on a good old spydie

Can you even pick it up without getting cut?!

Actually those serrations look pretty well done. Definitely looks like a practice piece though.

This is the first I ever knew that Spyderco and the Mattel toy company did a collaboration  or did they  ?? I've seen some Gil Hibben stuff that sort of looked like that. Now all we need is for Rod Serling to walk around the corner and say "Your Next Stop Is The TWILIGHT ZONE" :D

Looks like a factory test piece of different serrations. Looks too clean to me to be an end user with a dremel.

C’mon Sal, tell us what this is.
