I wonder if Sal and Eric ever (briefly) carry knives from other makers or companies in the interest of research. Maybe if you are only carrying and using what you make and design then your thoughts/ideas could become constrained? I would think it’s also good to stay on top of what the competition is doing right and what they are doing wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sal's favorite blade isn't a Spyderco... just because he designs and makes great knives, doesn't mean he can't appreciate other makers' stuff!

I'm pretty sure I remember Sal commenting that both he and Eric carry knives from other makers fairly often. They're knife enthusiasts just like the rest of us so that would only make sense.

As mentioned, More often than not Eric and I are carrying and using prototypes, first articles and new production production pcs.

We do pay attention to the competition, but we also feel that we don't want to copy their thing. More to seeing what's going on, While we're competition, there is a mutual respect between Spyderco and many of the major makers in the industry.

When traveling, I'll often carry a UK because of not knowing local laws. In salty areas, I carry Salts. New models or protos usually. When working on the proerty, I'm usually wearing gloves so large glove friendly models are used. If we intro 20 models in a year, that's a lot of carrying of protos (and there are usually more than one, 4 or 5 is common. This week I was working the Annapolis boat show and carried a Caribbean.

Well we know how he feels about nail nicks.

Spydies and GEC's go very very well together. They make up probably 2/3 of my collection.

Maybe he carries a Cold Steel Finn Wolf Folder at times, and then a Finnish Puukko?
