non-stainless manix 2 lw maintenance

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

how do you all keep your manix 2 lw from rusting around the pivot where you can’t reach it to clean it? i like to coat my blades with frog lube, but it’s impossible to get into the manix 2 lw.

i realize the cbbl is a bear to deal with. i just finished cleaning up a friend’s manix xl that was rusty after an accidental dip in the pacific. however, i’m interested in getting a less stainless steel like maxamet, but i don’t want it to rust in my salty environment.

how do you get around this issue? or do you just get a different steel?

I haven't found a way to get around it. I settled on carrying Salts as EDC knives.

You could try the DLC models. DLC makes the blade essentially rust proof aside from the exposed bevel in my experience, and on the Manix XL the liners are even coated as well. Very few DLC models from Spyderco also have coated liners, so the DLC Manix is about as close as you can get to a Manix Salt right now. There are a lot of cool options in the mini manix size, like the gray g10 DLC 52100 run. I'd grab an XL in that configuration for sure.

If the XL isn't your thing, the DLC Lightweight is about $85 I believe. They tempt me from time to time.

the cbbl is a pain to take apart and put back together, but i really wish the manix lw had screws like native lw does. c’mon, spyderco, help us out with a lw manix we can properly maintain please. some conversion kits for existing pinned manixes would be great too. i’d love a maxamanix, but i can’t get a steel that will rust because it’s impossible to take care of.

I simply don't buy a Manix 2 LW because of this. The design is 6 years old, time for an update with screw construction i'd say.

the manix is my favorite spyderco and i love my xhp version, but the pins are the only thing i don’t like about it. i would buy a maxamet manix if i could take it apart to coat the steel and maintain it, but it’s a no-go for me as is. maybe i’ll try the native lw in maxamet, but i’ve been waiting for the native salt. if i really like the native salt, maybe i’ll just get both and keep them for different purposes.

Melt the frog lube and let it seep down in there.
