Seems to me that I'm not being heard. We do not discuss gun vs anti gun issues on this forum. Dave, can you hear me?

Aye aye captain.

Hey! Spyderco bayonet- we can all agree on that! Right gang!

We try to avoid politics here. Right? Knife people come in all political tribes and variations. Do I have a personal opinion, of course. I'm a political junky. We all have our opinions and they are surely all over the board. But we don't do it on the Knife forum. Right?...
...Your kind understanding and cooperation is appreciated.

Sal, I apologize if my comments strayed too far into the political arena. It definitely was not my intention and I will try to do better in the future.

I suppose more relaxed knife laws are something everyone here can agree would be a good thing. Thanks to Knife Rights and Doug Ritter for all the work they do.

We can turn to The Bard for perspective on "nunnery" vs. "whorehouse."

Indeed, "nunnery" was Elizabethan slang for brothel, as with Shakespeare's pun in Hamlet (not without scholarly controversy).

Hamlet:
I did love you once.

Ophelia:
Indeed, my lord, you made me believe so.

Hamlet:
You should not have believ'd me, for virtue cannot so
inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I lov'd you not.

Ophelia:
I was the more deceiv'd.

Hamlet:
Get thee to a nunn'ry, why woulds't thou be a breeder of
sinners?

And of course for Spyderco/knife reference, the eternal witticism:

Ophelia:
You are keen, my lord, you are keen.

Hamlet:
It would cost you a groaning to take off mine edge.

It's quite refreshing to see the knife laws rolling back from the politicians over reactions to knife fights in West Side Story. However, it is a never ending battle. There are a lot of people that want someone else to make them feel safe, and they will push politicians to take away scary things from everyone, though only a tiny percentage will ever do anything to harm anyone. The recent thread about knife restrictions in London illustrates this well. I've always lived in states where knife laws were lax, and many times carried a balisong for work. I personally consider them or autos ide for work knives and hope some day everyone will be able enjoy the one hand opening, strength, and lock reliability of balisongs and auto knives as I have.

Here balisongs, Autos and even assisted knives are 100% illegal to carry- I think there are ways to own them but it’s a PITA
It’s just been that way as long as I’ve been alive.

And it's a shame. Those models have been restricted here as long as I can remember. Basically, you could own them, in the states I lived you could carry them, but couldn't carry them concealed. I carried mine in a belt pouch with my shirt tucked in so everyone could see it. You did have to be careful about some cities, as the laws could be significantly different from state laws.

When we get off track I take a “strong opinions losely held” approach.
Personally I don’t feel the need for autos or balisongs or what have you but really that’s not a good reason for none of us to have any given the limited risk in our current legal framework

Hi Dave,

Australian laws recently outlawed everything that could be flicked open. Even a Ladybug. It took Mike from Zen a long time (more than a year) fighting with the government in Canberra to get them to listen to reason and adjust their rules. Thanx Mike.

I think most laws outlawing ownership or carrying of object are based on fear or ignorance, whether the issue is owning and carrying a knife, a gun, or a muskrat. Example: Some states have laws restricting or outlawing nunchucks, which anyone can make from two sticks and a string. Not only does the prohibition not keep people from having them (because the "weapon" is so simple to make), but there is no reason to try and do so in the firstplace. Except some politician saw a Bruce Lee movie and wet his pants.
Laws should focus on not doing harm, and responsible use in public. I don't care if my neighbor owns a humvee, I care if he gets drunk and runs me over.
Same for knives: I don't care if he carries a balisong or a machete or a 15th century longsword, long as he doesn't cut someone with it.

The absurdity is most people who would drop the kind of money a decent "restricted" knife costs aren't going to hurt someone with it. How many criminals are out there toting high-end knives? Can you see someone ordering a $300 knife or a custom blade because hey, they wanna rob a store and steal fifty bucks?

Hi Dave,

How would you feel if you were arrested for breaking an irrational law?

Malum prohibitum laws need to go, plain and simple. Unfortunately, power once gained is never voluntarily relinquished.

Issue is that my feelings wouldn’t be relevant, I would still be arrested.

Obviously illogical laws like an outright ban on a legitimately useful tool like a knife is wrong but when advertised as being “built war tuff” or tactical etc etc it does kinda send an specific message

Hi Dave,

But, How would you feel about being arrested for an irrational law? simple question. The question is about your feelings.
