Oh man, this is a tough one! I have been shilling for 4V for so long and now we have another one in a model I like, BUT...it doesn't check all the boxes for me so I need to pass sadly. I hate passing on a 4V model :(

Pros: CPM-4V!, Manix 2, Exclusive
Cons: Smooth scales, Carbon Fiber, not FFG, price, not DLC

I'm pretty particular about what I buy (you wouldnt think so for how many i have) so it really has to hit all the marks. Heck, I passed on both Cruwear Manix sprints because I dont like CF and I didnt like the diagonal checkering on the G10 model. And I don't do any scale swaps or customizing so it needs to hit the marks as is. DLC is preferred most of the time, but not having it is never a deal breaker. The scales on this one are what do it in for me. I am pretty set in my ways of only liking the coarse peel ply textured G10 with no additional textures like the diagonal checkering on some models. And as others mentioned, not being FFG is a deal breaker.

I hope St. Nick's still eventually does a FFG Manix in their Red G10 / DLC 4V combo. That one checks ALL the boxes for me and i'd probably buy 2 of them.

Lol. Im with you. I want to see some exclusives of the other Manix models. Manix XL, Manix Backlock, Manix LW. The ultimate though would be the return of the original gangsta OG C95 Manix with dino jimping and monster back lock.

Not much love for the grind in this thread. Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but from what I've read in the other 4V threads, isn't a thicker grind what you want in a 4V knife?

With that lock (CBBL is the strongest lock in the catalog I think), with 4V, with that grind and a 40 degree inclusive edge, you should be able to take down a small tree with that knife. No?

We don’t really know yet how thick the grind is. It might be thinner (bte) than the FFG Manix. There are some really thin hollow grinds out there that are great cutters. This one doesn’t look that thin from the photos but it could easily be as thin or thinner than the FFG. We’ll see.

I think the behind the edge thickness will actually be thinner than on a FFG Manix 2. But the grind itself will wedge more on items like corrugated cardboard.

Not really, 4v has high toughness so it can take a thin FFG edge very well.

With the hollow ground it will probably still be quite thin behind the edge. But i personally don't like the looks and a FFG will move through whatever you are cutting nicer. And a FFG is nicer to sharpen once you need to thin down your edge.

Love seeing 4v and marbled CF. Definitely confused by the grind choice, but I might have to get one anyway. I enjoy hollow grinds, but the Manix blade shape really screams FFG IMO.

Love those scales! Don't love that grind! For me, I would rather have the Knifeworks 52100 dlc manix2 with dark grey g10.

This knife looks just about perfect. IMHO, the concern with toughness is overblown and Hollow Grinds should have never fallen out of fashion. The grind is simply a plus in my book. It would be great if the grind was higher, but the only thing that will keep me from this is the price likely resulting from the scale choice.

I'm sort of a form follows function guy, especially with Spydercos. I love the elegant simplicity, minimalism, ergonomics and functionality of their classic designs- not to mention the exotic steel choices! Part of what makes a Spyderco design great is what has been removed, not what has been added. Marbled CF or any scale material choice that adds this much to the cost is wasted on me. I'll look elsewhere for bling. YMMV of course. The price is understandable, but a disappointment to me.

Not a huge fan of hollow grinds but 4v is a great choice for thinner geometries. What is nice is that the bte will stay smaller as the blade is sharpened over time.

I do like that they selected 4v for the hollow grind.

I hadn't considered that it might be thinner BTE than FFG. Will be interesting to see when people get these in hand.

I probably won't be buying any more knives until the holidays/my birthday (Spyderco has been making so much good stuff my knife budget is gone :o ) But I like this one a lot.

full flat = no brainer. This grind however, no go.

I actually like the grind for this steel--good for toughness.

I kind of hope this one isn't an instant sell out. I really want one and I know I'll be busy at the time of release, and for at least 4 or 5 hours thereafter.

Yea would be nice if all dealers would follow SNK's lead and release during the evening hours, so the majority of working folks would at least have a shot at one. Instead of catering to the flippers who sit at home all day eating Cheetos.

I highly doubt this will be a sell out at this price with this grind and smooth scales, but I have been wrong before. The Manix DLC 52100 is still around and that thing is AWESOME and MUCH cheaper.

I would love to hear any experts' opinions on 52100 vs 4V? It seems they are both tough (which is tougher?), both corrosion prone (52100 probably a little worse than 4V), but 52100 easier to sharpen and 4V harder to sharpen. I guess 4V is going to be more wear resistant than 52100 as well, right?

My experience is with v4e (not 4v, but pretty close) and 52100. In my experience, the toughness is about the same (but I haven't really beat them up that much) but edge holding goes to 4v by a mile.

Those 1200 piece minimums were set by the factories making the runs for Spyderco, so likely the Seki City and Moki plants. In more recent years, for one reason or another, they've been accepting smaller runs (Due to the economy? Changing business practices? Steel suppliers not requiring as large of purchases?), which is why some of the Japan runs have been smaller than we're used to.

In the case of this knife, it is being built by Spyderco's own factory in Golden, so they can set their own minimums since they're not relying on a sub-contractor to build the knives. I'd also guess they were able to meet the minimum steel purchase requirement of 4V while keeping the run small by using it in other knives (such as the St. Nick's Para 3).

Thx Jabba, it does appear they're making it easier (cheaper) for smaller dealers to commission a run.

Long video that explains why (in most cases) ffg, (or convex) is better than a hollow grind.
