Delica 4 and Endura 4 without Sal's marking

#1

Post by archangel »

This is probably known to the cracks here, but not to me: both knives were designed by Sal (according to spydiewiki), but there is no marking on the blade. Why is that?

Hi Archangel,

I designed the models before I was adding my tag. Just haven't got around to adding it. There are quite a few of my designs that I haven't added my tag. Do you think I should?

I do think that adding your tag to the Military, Delica, Endura etc. would be cool.

Thank you for your reply, Sal. Both the Delica and the Endura are probably among the best sellers of the entire :spyder: catalogue. You should be super proud of them. If I were in your position, I'd make sure that every owner knows they were designed by you - even non-spydie nuts. :)

I would, for the reason stated by archangel. Though by doing so you'll create a whole new collector demand for duplicate knives with and without your sig!

A decade or two ago famed American potter Warren MacKenzie reputedly ceased signing his pots. He had always intended that they be used but, because of his fame, collectors were purchasing them as collectibles with no intention of using them and in some cases buying them solely for investment or resale. Warren assumed that the lack of a signature would discourage those collectors but, as he was born in 1924, by the time he stopped signing he had made many more pots than he would in the future, causing the unsigned pots to be rarer and therefore commanding higher prices-contrary to his intention. Would the same be true in reverse if Sal started "signing" production of previously unsigned models? My story is not exactly parallel and may be somewhat apocryphal. For a more authoritative recounting see:http://warrenmackenziepottery.com/

I think Sal deserves recognition for his brilliant designs. So even if he doesn't decide to put his mark on the current delica and endura models, I hope he puts it on the 5th generation models when they come out.

The signature on the Delica is long overdue. Maybe we could get things kicked off with a Sal-selected sprint.

They deserve to bear your signature in every and each iteration,
and you deserve to have your work recognised in them Sal :spyder:

I second 'sal sprints'.

Sal's favorite steel and colors with makers mark :)

I adore the delica and feel a makers mark would complete it.

Maybe we should all send our Delicas and Enduras in to Spyderco for Sal to sign?

Just kidding. It would be good to have his signature on the knives.

Adding your tag falls under CQI in my opinion
