More on Spyderco Slip Joint Folders: 3.5 inch or longer blade desired?
Due to the nonsensical laws that have been passed in various places against lock blades that open with one hand, if Spyderco were to introduce a slip joint non locking knife that requires two hands to open it, and has the trademarked hole as a tiny unusable feature that is there as part of the trademark, and especially with a blade that is 3.5 inches or longer, if it is of the proper steel and handle material, would you here buy it and would it gain a good share of the knife market?

Absolutely! :)

I have a design for a Two Hand Opener that locks. A THO that does not lock would be a larger Roadie?

I agree, holeshot, me too!
sal, I am so happy that you have a design in the works for that. I know many here like the Roadie, and for its uses and those that appreciate it, it is a good design. In my own personal opinion, the design just doesn't work for me. I was thinking something along the lines of a more general-purpose blade shape and profile, thin enough to cut well but thick enough to stand up to moderate-heavy use. Not severe survival use or anything, but, able to be a good general purpose folding knife.
I for one am eager to see the new designs.
Do you think a blade length of 3.5 inches or longer would be workable? The other question is the handle material. G10 or FRN? I personally love the FRN you use, that is the best material in my opinion. I know it is more expensive to get the molds and all of that into production though.

Hi SEF,
How would you open the blade?

Is SEF just thinking of a slightly more robust, larger, g10 UKPK? Or just something like a slippy manix or slippy stretch?

sal, I know it would be more time consuming and a bit more difficult than one hand opening, but the point of it would be a knife that would require two hands, perhaps along the lines of a nail nick but, maybe the trademarked hole can be within the nail nick, but, non functional; the nail nick and the blade would be under enough frictional tension to require the person to open it with two hands.
knivesandbooks: Not quite. Something almost like a cross between the Roadie and a Delica, as far as the blade goes. Maybe something more spear pointed or drop pointed? It is hard to picture accurately in my mind.

Sorry guys,
I am not likely to make a nail nick knife. No stirrups either. A little too retro for the guy that invented hole openers. The Double dent is my solution to opening a knife with two hands.

A nail nick would be a huge step backwards. No thank you SEF!

I also do not want to see a spyderco with a nail nick.
Which is why I'm so interested in the THO only locking knife design. I really want to see it.

I like the double dent at the tip of the blade for small knives, as it clearly meets the THO requirement, but wouldn't you be able to use a full Round Hole at the tip of a 3.5"+ blade? Then you've got your trademark look, and only one circle, that would require my two average sized hands to open.

I know, i know...burn the heretic! :p But for a two handed knife with usable length, good lock, thin slicey grind and useable pointy tip I'm in love with the okapi styled ones,

they don't need a nail nick, just grab the blade and the handle and pull
Looking forward to your design Sal!!

I have one of these, and I find that enough of the blade is visible that nothing is needed to open it. You could then put in a Spydie hole like the Positron or Hanan.

Re: More on Spyderco Slip Joint Folders: 3.5 inch or longer blade desired?
I was only sharpening my Roadie earlier and thinking the double dent would work marvellously on a larger Sheepsfoot....
Re: More on Spyderco Slip Joint Folders: 3.5 inch or longer blade desired?
I would love a larger double dent THO... However a 3.5" would be a bit larger than I'd like. I enjoy slip-joints closer to the 3" region and would enjoy having a Spyderco option.
I mean, obviously I'd still get one... But it wouldn't get carried half as much as a 3" would. Just my thinking on it.

Still very interested in this. Was hoping to see it.
Also, how about the one hander, the size between Urban and UKPK? I’m thoroughly enjoying my Urban K390 right now, and was thinking of this just today. Personally, I wouldn’t care for a 3.5ish one.
- best wishes, Jazz.

Re: More on Spyderco Slip Joint Folders: 3.5 inch or longer blade desired?
I am finding my UKPK just about perfect for a slip joint. Its ergonomics fit me very well, it is very light weight, the wire clip works fine, steel is great and the blade shape and length are right (personal taste). I tend to carry it and my Rhino consistently often clipped in the same pocket. It is nice to have a ready choice for the two blade types.
I suspect a larger slip joint would prove to be less useful than a locking blade of the same size.

I wouldn't mind a 3.5 inch slipjoint, but I like big knives and 3.5 would be about the biggest I'd want so a 3 inch would be great. I think that's the sweet spot for a large slipjoint. I'd like something that size with the double dent and a blade shape like the byrd pelican or caribbean sheepsfoot. I really want to like the roadie, but I just can't warm up to the blade shape.
